fuel pump quit working within mins. Little experience with fuel pumps.

1990 F-250 7.5L 460. Dual tanks...
Driving on front tank, half tank of gas in it.
It was driving fine then within 10 mins while driving on the freeway it starts to sputter, when i switched to rear tank it would run fine, back to front it would want to cut out. Now when truck is off and its on front tank, when I turn ignition on but do not start engine there is no fuel pump noise at all.

Will a fuel pump completely die that quickly?

Is it possible the pick up unit got clogged with gunk from the fuel tank, and if that is the reason for it not picking up fuel, would cleaning it out fix it or have i already put so much strain on it that is needs replacing.

Also, since the tanks have never been cleaned out, Im sure there is a bunch of sludge in the tanks, if I do need a new fuel pump should I clean out the tank so Im not putting new parts in a bunch of sludge just to have it be sucked up into my new pump. Is this something i can do myself. I know you can send your tank out to be cleaned but if there is a way to do it myself then well Id rather do it myself anyway. Any recommendations?

Not sure what fuel system they used on the 460 in 1990.

Dose it have the Hi-Pressure Fuel Pump on the frame by the drivers door and the fuel lines from both tanks go into a big round thing?

Or do the fuel lines from each tank just go to a filter on the frame and then to the engine?

Ford used both systems on different types of trucks in 1990.

If it is the first type you have a bad boost pump in your front tank and you would just have to pull the bed and take out the pump and look inside to see what condition the tank is in.

The second is about the same but the pump in the tank does all of the work and you would need to pull the bed to look at it also. It would also have a bad pump.

Ill have to look again, I know both tanks lines come together and go to the fuel filter but I dont know if it goes to the fuel/water seperator after that. A guy from my work says my truck has a fuel water seperator but Ill have to look. If my tank is all gunky how do you think I should clean it out. This guy says to take a pressure washer to the inside and let it air dry after I have dumped everything out but that seems quite messy. I will probably have to drop the tank instead of pull the bed since im doing it alone and my apt comlex garge wont hold my bed up.

So from my first threat your agreeing that its a bad fuel pump?

Yes, more than likely it is the in-tank pump but of course it also could be a connector or wiring under the truck.

I hear a lot on here about junk in the tanks and need to be cleaned but every one I drop always looks clean inside if it was being used.

I have not ever heard of a gas type truck having a water separator.
Maybe they are seeing the fuel selector valve that was on a lot of the 1989 and older trucks.

Well thank you very much for the quick responses to my questions. I will check it out when I get off work, and ill keep you informed just for the future if you ever have a similar problem. That tank has has a bad sending unit for a while so the guage obviously didnt work. I am having a hard time finding one for my truck online. I usually go with summit racing.com but they only list one with the ending year of 1989. I will check pep boys and see what they have but I want to change them out at the same time. Do you know of any websites that have a decent selection?

Most of the 1989 and older Ford Trucks (and 1990 Vans) the fuel pump and sender come together.
Most of 1990 and all of 1991 and newer Ford Trucks the sending unit and fuel delivery module comes separately.
