another fuel pump question
Driving on front tank, half tank of gas in it.
It was driving fine then within 10 mins while driving on the freeway it starts to sputter, when i switched to rear tank it would run fine, back to front it would want to cut out. Now when truck is off and its on front tank, when I turn ignition on but do not start engine there is no fuel pump noise at all.
Will a fuel pump completely die that quickly?
Is it possible the pick up unit got clogged with gunk from the fuel tank, and if that is the reason for it not picking up fuel, would cleaning it out fix it or have i already put so much strain on it that is needs replacing.
Also, since the tanks have never been cleaned out, Im sure there is a bunch of sludge in the tanks, if I do need a new fuel pump should I clean out the tank so Im not putting new parts in a bunch of sludge just to have it be sucked up into my new pump. Is this something i can do myself. I know you can send your tank out to be cleaned but if there is a way to do it myself then well Id rather do it myself anyway. Any recommendations?

Dose it have the Hi-Pressure Fuel Pump on the frame by the drivers door and the fuel lines from both tanks go into a big round thing?
Or do the fuel lines from each tank just go to a filter on the frame and then to the engine?
Ford used both systems on different types of trucks in 1990.
If it is the first type you have a bad boost pump in your front tank and you would just have to pull the bed and take out the pump and look inside to see what condition the tank is in.
The second is about the same but the pump in the tank does all of the work and you would need to pull the bed to look at it also. It would also have a bad pump.
So from my first threat your agreeing that its a bad fuel pump?
I hear a lot on here about junk in the tanks and need to be cleaned but every one I drop always looks clean inside if it was being used.
I have not ever heard of a gas type truck having a water separator.
Maybe they are seeing the fuel selector valve that was on a lot of the 1989 and older trucks.
Most of 1990 and all of 1991 and newer Ford Trucks the sending unit and fuel delivery module comes separately.
