Ahh, the beer and ice explains it!

I guess when you get these creatures loaded down, they do weight in at 7,500 and 8,000 pounds.

I had never thought about it that way.

I have to agree there is no need to go over 80-85 max in these trucks. Ive been building and modifieing cars for racing for years now and have gone way too fast on many occasions and speed regularly. I have been slowing way down as i get a lil older now though (only mid 20s but i think im starting to really "grow up" more lately) and i do not feel safe above 80 or so mph. I did take it to the speed limiter (98 on my 03 v-10 limited) and it was smooth and stable, but as someone else said, all it takes is one idiot to cut you off. Or a tire to blow at that speed and your in a LOT of trouble.

This is coming from a guy that took a 4200 lb 96 impala ss to 150mph on a open highway. (Yes i AM an idiot, and i was younga nd stupid) and regularly have gonbe way over 100 mph. This truck just is not safe at anthing over 80s in my honest opinion. Not cause of teh truck so muych, but because of what may happen around you out of your control.

wow what alot of atention this one got . yeah yeah i know lets all go slow and @%^$ but some times i do wonder just how fast could i get this up to 150 would be nice but then again like alot of others said go get a vet ( its not the same trust me) and besides i am only 25 and poor as dirt with kids to feed maby when i am 40 ill have a vet . so any way back on topic i just went to the grand coolie dam this weekend and i just had the hinkiring to cruse around 75 - 85 but if you pay atention to your vheicle like i do you will notice that you are crusing aroung 2500-3000 rpm not all that friendly when on reallllllllllllly long strait stretches NO TRAFIC IM NOT SUICIDEL .. also i would love to have maby a 7-8 speed auto trannd like the alisin 6speed or better not only for miliage but just plain drivability and i think that with a super low trany 1+2 gears wow what i could tow up hills but those are just dreams for now

All Fords have a speed limiter. Even our E350 PSD ambulances will only do 94-95. My 2000 F250 V10 cut out at 95. I haven't gotten the X going anywhere near that, it feels too unstable at regular freeway speeds. Never understood why the X didn't come with a rear sway bar.

You got to be crazy to drive one of these beasts that fast. Sorry but having said that, I invite you to put Excursion and rollover in the search box and google it. After you read about the roof collapsing and the doors and windows ejecting passengers, you might think twice about doing those kinds of speeds. These are literally killer machines at that kind of speed. Maybe thats why my insurance is so high! Andy former doodlebugger mechanic

"The least likely SUV to roll over is the Ford Excursion, the K Index predicts. The vehicle will probably roll over in less than 13% of its accidents, Kimmel says."

Maybe so, however race cars are built and designed not to roll and do. So if the excursion does???? I also am in the agreement it doesn't need to go that fast! If you do, buy something designed to do so!

Rollover?

Here is the story on this...

This one is armored and sustained damage to front of vehicle after a head-on crash and than lost control and rolled 2.5 times landing on roof. In this case, the armored passenger compartment provided exceptional rollover protection. Vehicle body experienced no crushing and all occupants survived unharmed.

So if you armor your X then I guess you can drive like a maniac!

Or maybe the rest of us should armor ours.

I got the beast in Denver and drove it home across Wyoming,up across Utah,Idaho and Oregon and had an absolute ball.. I was in O/D and cruise at the 75 mph speed limit ( and a couple of times up to 90,very briefly though) on the freeway and it was awesome.. Very stable platform..Then after I got home and put the TT on the back all that changed and untill I got all my changes made I felt very uncomfortable at much over 60..Now I feel comfortable up to about 75 again, but try to keep my towing speeds to a reasonable 60-65 MPH.. That's where the best fuel mileage is and that's where I feel safest in traffic if I have to avoid some idiot in a big "X" doing 90+mph...

Youd need a hella powerful diesel. And pray air did not get under it, or build some sort of ground effects kit for it.

What i want to know is when is ford going to build its roofs to take a rollover? Broncos and the older pickups had this same exact problem. Since the late 70s at least i believe? Whats the deal, other big SUVs roll and dont collapse, why cant ford build a roof that can handle a roll. I know these are havy vehicles, but so are tahoes suburbans and the like, and some of that extra 2000 lbs should be built into the roof in my opinion. A cage could be build during manufacturing for a few hundred dollars im sure.
