I just changed the oil in my X (90K) and now it drips from the plug. I noticed when I drained it, that it had a nylon/plastic washer that was damaged. I went to the dealer to replace it and they gave me a copper washer for the plug and said this was correct. The manual states to torque the plug to 6 ft lb. After pouring in the new oil in, it began to show signs of dripping. I went back to the dealer thinking that maybe the plug/bolt was incorrect. It appeared so when I got the new one. I drained the oil again, put in the other drain bolt with another new washer, torgued it correctly and it still drips. I just power washed the driveway and now have spots again! I am afraid to torque it any tighter in fears of stripping the threads. Should I find another washer? Any suggestions are appreciated.
Does the pan look damaged in anyway? I do know that the copper washer is correct on the factory pan. You could always us this as an oppertunity to upgrade to a larger pan that dissipates heat better.
Autozone or other parts stores usually stock a slightly oversized thread oil pan plug. If yours is stripped this would be the first thing to try. Im guessing your threads are bad or it just needs more torue. Dont go crank on it and blame me if it strips though! lol
maybe i am just lucky, but i put all i can into tightening the drain plug...i am only 160 lbs but there is not enough room for too much leverage and a 10 inch ratchet helps me not overtighten, but I am sure it takes more than 6 lbs to remove it and i put more than 6 ft lbs on all I replace...always room for another 1/4 turn
