I have a 1979 Ford f-350 4x4. It has a 429 engine with an automatic trany. my engine is getting extremly tired and needs rebuilt. I am going to pull the engine out and start a rebuild. So I was wandering since I have the engine out and I know I need a new torque converter. what would it take to install a newer trany that has an overdrive and possibly a locking torque converter. Can it be done while keeping my original transfercase? If so what trany model do I need? Dose any one have a trany for sale? Has any one done this already? Any info will be great, thank you.
The 429 shares the same tranny bolt pattern with the 351m/400 and the 460. To get an auto overdrive you will have to install an electronically controlled overdrive tranny in place of the old C-6. I beleive the only auto overdrive option is the E4OD. You can get an aftermarket computer that does the shifting for you. It may be more economicial to replace the c-6 with a manual transmission that has overdrive but that is something you have to explore in costs.
alxsnmr is right about the E40D option. You could also get an AOD, but would have to spend some cash on an adapter plate to bolt up to the motor and also upgrade the tranny with performance parts.
If you can score a good E40D for cheap, the computer setup to control it is around $525. would be the ceaper option.
You should also be able to get a gearvendors overdrive unit for the truck to bolt on to your current setup, but would be very costly also.
