Should be about 9/16 or 13mm. Hold the bottom nut and spin the top, it's a jamb nut the first nut holds tension, the second one secures the first. If you are trashing them, you have the sawzall option available.
i tried 3/4" too small and 7/8" too big.....maybe a 13/16"?? i don't have that one, so wanted to make sure before i ran out and got one. new shocks came with new top nut, so will need to use the one of the old ones.
OK......managed to get the top nut off........how do you get the shock out from inside the spring if the bottom nut is still on which is keeping the washer/disc on??
I don't know what mount you have, but it should just unbolt and drop straight down. I would expect you to have a 2wd and the lower mount is a bar with two bolts. Those two bolts should be holding anything but the shock.
it's 2wd but there is not enough room between the lower mount and the ground that i can slide the shock all the way out. if i took a picture and sent it to you, do you think that would help.....i'm in serious need of advice to get these changed.
You will need to get the front end off the ground enough to clear them. Another trick you might try, depending on how desperate you are; if you can't get the truck high enough, make the ground lower. Dig out enough so that the shocks can drop all the way out.
yeah....it's desparation time, but rain is on the way, so i'll try it tomorrow...just hate that i have to thread that top nut all over again so that i can go to work!
I wound up using a 20mm on the bottom and turning the top with a 7/8. going to put it on ramps tomorrow to allow me to get the shock out.
I bought the Monroe Sensa-trac shocks (as i did for the rear), but I noticed that they only come with one nut. Do the OEM nuts fit the stem on the Monroe's?? Will more than likely reuse the nuts, bushings and busing caps/washers from the OEMs when I install the Monroe's.
then what should i do about what was supplied with the Monroe shocks (which were recommended by several people) being that they only supplied 1 nut???? basically the bottom nut on the OEM is bottom out on the shaft......is it necessary to replace this one with the new Monroe shocks?
The monroe's didnt fit my truck for sour apple S***... those were the worst thing i ever did for my truck... the bushing on them dont fit either, and they tend to rattle because of that...
OEM all the way..better ride and they last longer... only got 30k out of my monroes... had 100k+ on my original factory shocks
