Well guys I've finally got around to doing some maintenance to the f-6, but have a few questions. I'm gonna start by redoing my entire brake system, repack wheel berings etc., but I was thinking of pulling the cover off the rear diff. to see what everything looked like. Is this a good idea? What fluid is preferred in the rear? I was also thinking of changing the fluid in the transmision, what fluid should I replace with? On the rear someone told me brake parts cleaner or carb. cleaner will clean the gears and inner housing up well, is this true? I've not done this type of maintenance before just mostly oil changes and greasing. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Joe
Yes that is a very good idea. I did the same thing to my truck and brake cleaner works very well. It depends on were you live I guess, if I remember correctly if it gets over 100 degrees you should use 80w140 if below 80w90.
I did, I used 80w90 in both trans and rear. I also pulled the PTO cover off the side of the trans and cleaned it as well with brake cleaner. I did this as soon as I got the truck home so I never drove it before the fluid change but it does shift very smooth. However the sycronized trans was an option if your reverse is all the way right and down your trans is not syncronized and will require a double clutch to shift or you can float it in gear if your good. If it is all the way right and up you have the sycronized trans.
Good news is I have the sycronized trans. thanks for the info. I wasn't sure about the transmission fluid whether to use 80w90 gear oil or automatic trans. fluid. Don't mean to be a pain but better safe than sorry. Have a good one.
