P/U vs "X" MPG differences

I have several friends that have diesel P/U's and when we're talking about mpg they always ask me just why I get so much lower mileage than they do around town and on the freeway.I got an average of 16.5 from Denver to Tacoma in October when I got the "X" without mods.I haven't been on a long solo trip since I got the intake and exhaust done,so mebbee it'll show up as 2 to 4 mpg better. I have improved to 11 mpg towing on mostly freeway pulling but that also included one major mountain pass and three major hills.I am also getting 10-11 mpg around town with a commute of 6 miles 1/2 of which is freeway.
Is it that the gear ratios are different? Is it because of the 7200# dry weight?? or what...

The Excursion is heavier by 1300 lbs, and this does make a difference, but the real culprit is aerodynamics. The Excursion is squared off in the back, and that flat rear makes for some really good suction. The pickups do not have as large of a flat section, and create a correspondingly smaller suction, therefore, better gas mileage.
