can you swap a 3spd. manual transmition into a automatic with out a great deal of work, if this is possible i would like to hear comments and what will work and how to do it
I changed from a 3speed to an auto in my 77. The donor trans came from a 74 Bronco. The swap was almost too easy. All of the parts that I needed were available from the 74 and all of the connections were in my 77 and just plugged in. I had another Bronco to part out (steering column
Unless you have a donner truck it could get expensive, otherwise it's probably the easiest trans swap to do for a Bronco. The transfer case is in the same location so the driveshafts stay the same. If you have to buy the parts you will need a T-case adapter and possibly a new mainshaft in the transmision if it came out of a 2 wheel drive. You will need an automatic steering column for the shifter unless you put a floor shifter in it. The Power and non-power steering columns are very different so be sure to get the one you need. Lose the clutch pedal and you have it done. All the Bronco parts suppliers have the adapter if you need it.
In the process of going the opposite direction. Going to replace auto with a 435 4 speed and 205 tcase. Now that I am gathering parts, I would have to say it would be a lot easier swapping a auto in for a standard. You should check the input shaft of the 20. I have read somewhere that there is a different input shaft for use with an auto trans. check Wild Horses for info.
