I have a 1998 F150 4.6L, V8, Manual tranny, 4x4, 3.55 gear. I am going to 4.10. I am doing the install but have never worked on one before. So here are a few questions someone could help me with.
There is a set of gears for the front and rear right?
Besides the gears what other parts are needed?
What special tools is needed?
Where can I get a very good installation manual?
Who has the best price on gears?
Don't take this as an insult, but the questions you are asking tells me that this is well above your skill level. I would highly recommend paying to have them professionally installed.
Search on Google if you want to get an idea of how technical a procedure this is...
This is something that you should help someone with or watch being done a couple times (by someone with experience) before attempting for yourself, not just read a manual on. Seriously.
i agree with tdister dont take it as offence...but get someone to do it...my dad has been a mechanic on tractors for about 12 years and we pulled the transmission on mine and re did it all but when we pulledthe rear end he wouldnt even touchb that...and he has redone thousands of rear ends on tractors....and even some on older 77 and 79 ford trucks...but these 8.8 rear ends can tend to be picky and need to be shimmed up just right....and if they arent you are going to run into problems....i just removed the whole axle from my truck and took it into my local ford dealer...along with the gears and carrier i got off ebay...they installed it..shimmed it and meshed it up all properley and i went home and installed the axle again..
removing the axle is really not all that hard...had mine dropped in about 30 minutes. and back up in about an hour our so.
hope this helps.
i do recall a guy on here syaing he paid ford $900USD in labour to change both the front and rear sets...he supplied the parts.
++++1000 on getting a pro to setup the gears, jerk it out and take them somewhere, if not setup correctly within 5 miles they will start growling and the wear pattern will be screwed, this from my local, shop called transaxle that specializes in heavy equipment tractor trailers and any type of automobiles made for over 70 years..check out nationaldrivetrain for prices and gears, I;ll be installing a 4.10 set in my 5.4L soon with there help I;ll use motive gears...highly reccomended..
