would you fix it or replace it?

I have a 98 F150 4x4 with the 4.6 Romeo motor in it with 250K miles on....The head gasket is pretty much all the way gone...most of the time when i start it now the engine is getting locked up from the water in the pistons so needless to say its parked for a while...I ran it really hot for almost 40 mins (to get home) the first day it blew but since then have just made short trips with it around the farm here...I need this truck severly and want to fix it very soon but just cant decide if I should find another motor for it or replace the head gasket...Do you guys think I have done any further damage to the head or the rest of the motor already?

With that many miles and 40 miles of oil water going in the crank case the bearings for the crank are shot too! Put a crate motor in and keep going.

I called about a crate motor and they quoted me $2700 at autozone. that seems a little pricey to me for a truck thats 10 yrs old...I mean I love the truck and all but man that seems like alot of dough for a motor...

A lot of dough!
It isn't a common push rod motor of the last 50 years.
It's an overhead cammer that is rather expensive to rebuild correctly.
2700 for a long block is about right and you will spend more than that by the time it's all done.

check the local repos or wreckers. you may find a lower mileage unit for a fraction of the cost of a new crate engine. maybe even could buy a whole truck wrecked for 3 g's...

I'd check with these guys, they are close to you, cheap and guarantee their parts. I have bought several engines and transmissions from them for customers, they are worth the 1 1/2 hour drive for me.

Thanks alot Tenn....I actually called them a few weeks ago but they do not have a Romeo motor...thay are only about 10 miles away from me...I am lucky to have several salvage yards within a few miles of me...only thing is there is only one around that has the romeo motor and it happens to be 1.5 miles from my house(town and country auto here in amanda)...they want $1250 for it which i thought was pretty decent....however I just found a 4.6 on craigs list here in the columbus area with a transmission for $350 with 90K miles...its in a totalled 97 merc cougar and from what I understand the block and the head should work on my motor...Im hoping...I am going to pick it up next week...I figure i may get 100-200 out of that tranny that comes with it...

I also use www.car-part.com quite a bit as well. Yes you are lucky, all the yards local to me tend to be high enough that for not much more I can buy new at NAPA. I use craigs list quite a bit as well, been watching Dayton and Columbus there for wheels to fit my 87 F-150. Good luck with the engine.
