I have a 2001 F250 with a 6" Skyjacker lift. 35" tires non aggressive. Truck has new ball joints, new tie rods, and just got it all alingened. I just purchased this truck a few weeks ago and I've done all this front end work trying to solve a crazy steering wheel...
At high speeds in a sweeping corner the wheel will shake back and forth (very nerveracking). At low speeds after a few tight turns once going straight the wheel will go left to right you can't even hold it straight...
I'm lost is it a steering box???? They are over $200.00 plus they don't look like fun to put in!
You should be able to check play in the steering box by just watching the pitman arm as a buddy turns the wheel in the cab. Yes, in a 2001 the box might be getting worn, but it should be driveable. Adding a new, aftermarket, steering stabilizer might help fix the problem since you are running 35's and the OEM stabilizer is probably tired. However, since you have replaced nearly everything else, I would say it is most likely the Trac-bar, also called a Panhard Bar. It is the brace that goes from the frame on one side of the truck down to the axle on the other side. If the bushings are worn, or if the bolts are loose, the truck will exhibit the symptoms you describe. Also, since your running a 6" lift there are additional factors. What you describe is pretty much called "bump steer," and on lifted trucks and can be caused by an improperly installed lift. To minimize bump steer, you need to have a dropped (elongated) pitman arm, and the bracket for the trac-bar should be dropped as well. I would verify that both of these parts are on your truck, and that they are properly installed before replaceing any more items. Sounds to me like the problems you are haveing are steering geometry issues as the result of your lift.
I'm going to replace the trac bar bushing monday. It is all thats left besides the steering box. And they are alot cheaper. It does have a drop pitman arm and a drop bracket for the trac bar.
I dont even run a trac bar on trucks with lifts over 6 inches. I even run my SD with 39.5" boggers, and no stabilizer. I tow, and run normal highway speeds with no steering problems. You mentioned the replacement of many components, but did not mention the inspection, or status of the drag link. The drag link is a very overlooked component and could cause your steering symptoms.
You also mentioned a sweeping turn, and oscillation of the steering wheel. This to me sounds like a wheel bearing problem. Have you taken the weight off of the front wheels and checked the bearings?
Something is loose, and should be pretty easy to narrow down. I have seen the tapered holes in the knuckles, or tie rod wear out, and go out of round caused by an improperly sized replacement part, or just plain worn out component.
Bearings are good. Drag link is good. Again I feel like I'm chasing a ghost becouse it is not always thier. The allingment shop shop said is was toed in but not terrible.
It really does not feel safe at highway speeds. Alot of people have been telling me to put smaller tires on it but I've had 35's on all my trucks and never had this problem before.
Don't know if you read these other threads but try a search on "death wobble" and read their answers . They seemed to come to the conclusion that dual stabilizers went a long way to curing what you are describing.
I really want to thank everyone for their help.. I found out it was a bad right hub. It was locking and unlocking and causing the truck to pull and weave as like it was possesed... Thanks again
