My sister wants to buy a Ford Escape, I was thinking which years would you recommend? Which engine is better the 4 cy or the 6 cy? Also what problems are common with SUV, any trans problems?
Does Escape have Macferson Strut suspension system?
(can someone move this post to the Escape section, thank you)

And if you don't need the power (the V6 can haul), the 2.3l is good on gas. (as in, I would pick the 2.3l... save some money on purchase price, and at the pump)
There aren't really any problems with the SUV... apart from its tendency to use Brake Rotors.
And yes, it does have MacPherson struts at the front
If she is looking for a used one, I would stick to 2004 or later as there were a lot of complaints of transmission problems with the earlier models. And the brake rotors as was already mentioned.
If she is considering new, there are great deals right now on the remaining 2007 models.
For fuel economy, the 3.0 V6 is a gas pig in local/city driving. Not bad on the highway. The 4 cylinder with the standard transmission is a pretty fuel efficient combination too.
Starting with the '05 models, the shifter was put on the floor so some storage space was lost, as was some legroom.
The front wheel drive only version is very sure-footed - even in snow. I'd get the AWD version only if she really needs it.
And of course, no post of mine about the Escape would be complete unless I recommended the hybrid version . They are great on gas and otherwise identical to the gas only version.
Both engines are solid and proven themselves. The 2.3 has good acceleration and saves money in the long run. They have great incentives on what's left of the 2007's.
I don't know why, but the rotors on my '02 Tribute lasted 110,000 miles and I tow a 2200 lb. boat. I can't imagine the Mazda's rotors are any different than the Escape's but you never know. I was looking at the Consumer Reports repair summary over the weekend and the Escape and clones all come out pretty good.
