So I'm thinking about buying a heavy duty front bumper on craigslist but the owner said it has some surface rust. I was thinking I would just sand it and cover it with line-x to contain the rust and spiff up the look a little bit. I know there was a guy that did this to his bumper and tailgate on another thread and I've seen others do it too. What is the best brand/method to use?
I don't know anything about line-x, but I put herculiner in the bed of my truck, and I think it turned out wonderfully. I saw a site online where a guy used it to repair the grill of his jeep. I'm sure it would do good on your bumper as well, that's if you don't mind the "knobby look finish"; anyway here's the link:
i've seen herculiner on a vice mounted on a truck bed that was covered in linex. save your money, go for the linex. the guy that did my ranger cut me a great deal. the herculiner next to the linex is a joke and it's all chipping off.
Yeah I guess I didn't word it correctly. I didn't mean Line-X brand in particular, I just liquid bedliners in general. Yeah I've seen some pretty good jobs with that herculiner; I found the thread where Josh posted pictures of his herculined bumpers and tailgate:
Skando, I don't have any pics to post right now but I used a Dupont product that I purchased at Walmart. I sprayed it in the bed of my 91 and I was really impressed.
You can roll it if you want but I prefer the sprayed look.
You'll need to buy a special spray gun, I think mine was about 70 bucks, I got it at Napa. Just follow the directions and it will work for you. It says you can mix it with acetone if you want, I recommend it. I played with the mix and tested the product out on a wheel barrow, once I found the mix that I liked I sprayed light coats until I had an even , fairly thick finish coat. The acetone helps it dry quicker and it doesn't hurt anything ( in my opinion ) when spraying light coats. Good Luck
That sounds great Matt. It would be AWESOME if you could get me some pictures of the finishing product. $70 is a lot to spend if it doesn't end up being what I want. What did the $70 pay for? Just the spray gun?
I'll try to get some pics posted just this weekend... I have not mastered the attaching picture thing yet, I'm alittle slow....
I had about 200 hundred in the whole deal, 70 of it was just the gun but I have done several bed liners for friends since then so the gun ended up paying for itself.

JEEZ, for that much I would rather have Line-X do it professionally and get a lifetime warranty on it. I think I'll stick with the cheap stuff Still would love to see some pictures though.
