Now, I like this idea for the future. I have a question, though. How does it help a poor schmuck like me that can't afford a new hybrid or even a high mpg car? The bottom line is that gas prices hurt my wallet. If I incur more debt to save money on gas, how does that make me (or any of us) better off?

Sorry that I misunderstood you earlier. In my opinion, 38+ mpg IS a high mpg car.
...and I wouldn't go into debt to get to 45 mpg either...just think about all of those driving F150's back and forth, and count your blessings...
I sure hope we invade another oil producing country real soon.I cant wait for it to hit $5gal,,,Gee,what ever happened to the "spoils of war".We kick iraq out of Kuwait and then give it back to the kuwaities and we get $3gal!
Last night on 20/20 they showed that fuel prices were actually higher in 1981 if you figure inflation. Uh.....OK. I always love how those things get thrown into the light to show that It isn't all that bad. Oh, and that we should want the oil companies to make more profits, so they can have money to look into better ways to refine fuel and more environmental friendly.
$5 per gallon. You bet we are going to see it. Hopefully, there won't be any big hurricanes for awhile. But, heck, even if there are small ones, fuel prices will still rise. Any more mideastern crisis will cause them to rise higher. You all know the routines. Then to put a spin on things. As Dennis stated also, what happens when more and more people change driving habits or buy more economical vehicles and the demand of fuel actually exceeds supply? Do you think fuel prices will actually go down? NOPE. For the lost revenue, they will have to make up for it so prices will not go down. They actually may increase. There will be an excuse for everything. If not this than that.
