400?

I could use some help. The 351 Cleveland I was given looks to be a 400. The Block numbers that were around the starter were D1AE-A10. It was hooked to a trans. with 4wd on the end of the trans. He pulled it out of a f150 75 but was told it was not the original motor. The trans. says it's S 96? I plan on putting it in a F1 1950. What do you think.

How many bolts on the valve covers? Does the thermostat housing bolt directly onto the top of the block?

351C/351M/400 identical in appearance. All have 8 valve cover bolts, a flat plate for an engine front cover (timing cover part of the block), and the fuel pump bolts are at 12 and 6 o'clock.

Hijacked from the 73-79 tips and tricks thread...

351M/400 335 series: intake is 12.7" wide the 351C is narrow. The 351M and 400 are identical externally, only internal parts examination can tell them apart.
Bill, does that mean he could measure the width of the intake manifold and tell the difference?

Possibly...the block he has is an early one: D1A is 1971, the first year for the 400. The 351C introduced in 1970. However, the 351C was never used in F Series trucks.

EDIT: 1975/82 351M/400's uses a different intake manifold gasket set (D5AZ-9433-A) than the 1974 and earlier 351C/400's do. There are at least 4 different 1970/74 351C/400 intake gasket sets, depending on whether it's a 400 (in 1971 only), a 4 bolt 351C engine, and with/without T/E.

Not in the United States.

I'm almost 100% sure they were in F series trucks in the UK or possibly somewhere else.

I read somewhere here on FTE that some Australian trucks used the 351C. Never seen one..never been to Australia. FTE moderator Big F350 will know for sure.

Sorry for the delay I'm a shift worker. After reading some more theads ( Thanks ) I found the Casting stamp DIF and on the back with the stamp were the numbers L5 and below it were E2 ? I check the numbers again on the side by the starter and they are D1AE-A1C (sorry). I have 8 bolts on the valve covers and the timing chain is part of the block with a thin sheet of metal in between. The Thermo is bolt to the block and the fuel pump bolt are at 12 and 6. Did I find the casting date are do I need to keep looking. Thanks for the info I already received by the way.

Ok I talked to the young man I got the engine and tranny from and he said it came out of a 77 f150 4x4 ranger. He was told the engine was not the original motor but he is not sure about the tranny. the casting stamp says DIF and the block casting number is D1AE-A1C. The number L5 and below that was E2 by the DIF number but that's all the numbers I have found at this time. I would like to know if this is a bad block I have read about the pre 77 blocks. Which forum can help me with the tranny?

I have a 351M with the same cast #. Apparently it was a reman. with several different parts. date code would be needed to figure it out. look on front by the timing cover. Then look for another little plate with 2 rivet looking humps, that's the reman date/code.

Engine Identification (rev):
======================
351C/M/400 335 series: 8 bolts in rectangular valve covers. Timing chain housing is part of block. Thermostat housing on block. Exhaust bolt holes diagonal.
351M/400 335 series: intake is 12.7" wide the 351C is narrow.
351W/302/5.0L 6 bolts on trapezoidal valve covers. Thermostat housing on intake. Exhaust bolt holes horizontal.
429/460 385 series: 7 bolts in rectangular valve cover
352/360/390/427/428 FE series: Intake goes under valve covers.
-There are other indicators but these are enough to distinguish engine families.

Looking at the block at the base of the distributor the 351C will be even with the bottom of the intake manifold. With a 351M/400 there will be a ~1" high lip up to the bottom of the intake manifold.

-Yes you can measure the distance across the intake manifold to tell the difference between a 351C and a 351M/400.
