I have a 92 Bronco 351w and recently experienced a problem that has never happened b4. On one of my usual trips around town my radio shut off and then all of my gauges needles went haywire. I immediately went home cuz i have had the same problem in the past with other vehicles, the alternator. Since I had just recently had my truck worked on, too many parts to list that I had replaced, the only thing I could think of was the alternator which was not replaced, which is the original. So i decided to replace that, and had no problems till a few days ago. I went to the store and on the way back the same problem occured and when the gauges started working again my amperage was indicating lower than usual. I have a stereo system installed which was on but was not turned up and I had the a/c running. Now my stereo system will not work and I am worried to drive it anywhere because I don't want to mess it up anymore than what it already is. The alternator I put in was from Summit Racing, which they stated was for my truck but it did not have the plug hook ups for the original plugs, just a new power cable. Could that be my problem? Please help!!
you probably should have come on here first. first i would replace both positive and negative battery cables. now the alt you purchased is it a stock unit, how many amp is it?
I know, but with this one I thought it was a no brainer, but I guess that's where my first mistake occured, thinking before asking. it is a Powermaster 140 amp and no it is not stock (i thought it was suppose to be when I bought it). As far as the cables, is there anywhere I can find the oem ones, I don't want to get into the hassle of trying to get cables cut to length. By the way your help is greatly appreciated.
check out www.fordfuelinjection.com. you possibly need a fusible link with that much juice and as for the cables, any parts store like napa etc. should have the proper length cables
great info, but should i be worried about the plugs that are no longer used with my new alternator?? should i get an alternator that has the proper equipment to utilize these plugs?
You just answered your question. You put did a 3G alternator upgrade without changing the trucks wiring harness (which is 65 amp)...like kemical said...fordfuelinjection.com. the plugging for a 2g to 3g is different, you probably have two plastic plugs, one 2 and one 3 wire. your 3g has a two wire, a one wire and a post. The power wire upgrade/fuseable link is REQUIRED for 140amp, plus the new wiring harness. about $75 bucks total.
