Project engine parts to Order-input needed

Here's my list:

Cam/lifter set-Order through Summit
Valve springs-Order through Summit
Timing Set-Order through Summit
Full engine gasket set-Order through Summit
Oil Pump-I think it's a good idea, just standard flow, unless we upgrade to a bigger pan?-Local NAPA
Fuel Pump-Local NAPA
Water Pump-Local NAPA

Anyone think of anything else?

PS...I noticed we don't have a fan, I've an electric one if we want to go that route...not sure if I have a mechanical one that has the right bolt pattern though.

Remember that the rockers in the D0 heads may not be the same - nor the push rods. We will need to double check this before we order valve springs as we may be better off with a roller rocker kit.

My book shows the push rod as having as much as 12% side load - a standard Ford push rod could fail with this much side load, a strong valve spring, and a high lift cam.

One thread discussed relocating the radiator to the bed of the truck. An electric fan would seem to be helpful, ya think?

Hmmm... Lessee. Belts, hoses, plugs, wires, antifreeze, oil, oil, oil, air filter, oil filter, distributor, ... The list goes on, and on, and on...

To quote an old blues tune, "Don't start me talkin', I'll tell everything I know".

Good idea on the drive, but I'm going to defer for now on the cam/main and rod bearings...if we go that far, may as well turn the crank, resize the rods, bore the block, run flatops, relieve the casting flashes, etc., etc.

As I mentioned, the mains looked good, cam bearings are usually the last thing in engines to wear since there's very little thrust on them.

As far as the ancillary stuff (fluids/etc) I'll do that at Kragen AUto when the time comes.

ALso, looks like I need to weld up the oil [pan, there's two rubber plugs, one in the sump, one at the rear...I geuss they must be for when the cars come in, they drill a hole and suck out all the oil for recovery?

I dunno, but we don't need no stinking extra holes...unless we need a drain back for a SuperCharger

I do not know if it has been mentioned but I know Clint asked about the rockers for the D0VE heads, they are different from your pedistal mount rockers that were on the D3VE heads, they look similar to a cheby rocker with the stud mount rocker, so you will need rockers for the new heads (that is unless the heads come with rockers), next, if you buy roller rockers or evem roller tip rockers you will have to use guide plates, & if using guide plates you will need hardend pushrods to keep them from galling on the guide plates, & last but not least on the roller rockers, the stock studs will not work correctly with adjustable roller rockers, but a set off BBC 7/16 studs will sub in nicely.

What is the plan for a distributor & ignition? might need to purchase some of these components.

I just look at the ad & the heads are pictured with the stock rocker, however if you plan to upgrade to roller rocker keep the above cost in mind.

Yes, the heads have adjustable rockers, at this point I don't think we'll go to roller or roller tipped, as long as these rockers loko good. i/e no stresses/ or wear, we'll run them to keep cost down.

AS with other things and such...if we have to pull the engine in the future and go through it, then we can spend for upgrades at that time.

I think we may want to get one-pc Pushrods though...the ones that came in our original engine have the pressed in ends...

Do you have any comment/concerns on these?

Thanks

RE: The igintion, it has an HEI with vac advance, I'm thinking of just upgrading the module inside and looking at recurving it when we get the engine running....assuming it's like a GM HEI.

The engine will only turn to abuot 5000/5500 max (figure 5500 in 1st gear), so I'd think the stock coil should keep up okay for the RPM's we'll run.

I think we have to many threads going, I posted in the "heads" thread that this is still a non adjustable valve train,

I do agree that 1 piece push rods would be a nice upgrade,

As for the ignition, HEI? unless it is after market it should have the duraspark distributor which requires an external modual, it is easy to wire & with a decent coil I have run them to 7000 rpm without any trouble,

for what you guys are doing I would ditch the vac advance, I would just use the mechanicle adv. limit it to around 15-20* of advance then set your timing to 38* full advance (3000-3500 rpm)

That sounds good on the ignition....I'm not familiar with the Fords, it looks like a small mag cap in fact, but like you say, no reason to upgrade here, heck, we won't be touching those RPM's anyways.

Small cap..................Hmmmmmm, next time you get a chance have a look & see if that is a points distributor, (the small cap will fit both, & both electronic & points came in the 429/460 engines)

If it is points I think it would be good to step up to the duraspark, I might even have most of the stuff laying around here,

Tag your it again, this time I'm going to bed,

I'll check in tomarrow.
