Clutch hydraulics

I just want to double check. I've got one of our work trucks stranded about 200 miles from the office where the driver said the truck made a funny noise (which he can't describe) and the clutch pedal fell to the floor. He talked to a mechanic in the area who came out, got under the truck and said something was loose and it probably needed a new clutch. The truck is a 99 with a year old clutch in it from a dealer. It has not had any problems or grinding shifting lately. The truck will start with the pedal on the floor in nuetral, and will lurch forward trying to start in while it's in gear.

From the work I've done on old trucks I think we can rule out the clutch disc or pressure plate as being the problem. That leaves the throw out bearing having completely disentegrated, or the hydraulic master, slave assembly has some issues.

I'm thinking we need to just buy the master/slave assembly and replace it. If anyone thinks it may be something else I'll take a trailer out there and pick the truck up to bring it to a local mechinic I know I can trust. If it's just the hydraulics I can have the driver change that there.

You're opinions are greatly appreciated.

Any way to diagnose that without pulling the transmission? Looks like I'll be driving out to get it with a trailer then.

Twist out slave cyl. and look inside bell housing. Also when removed push slave cyl. rod back in and see if pedal comes back up.

The hydraulics were not the problem. Had the truck towed to the local ford house and the mechanic said it's a bad pressure plate. Clutch was replaced 7/31/06, about 40,000 miles ago by a different ford dealer. Is there a chance the last dealer screwed something up or is it just bad luck having a pressure plate failure so soon?

Do yourself a favor and immediately order a Kevlar pilot bushing to replace the factory pilot bearings. Now is the time to replace it. This bushing is the single best thing you can do for your 6 speed's longevity. Followed closely by a LUK or South Bend clutch/flywheel unit.

I think it's bad luck. If it was installed wrong it would have reared its ugly head a long time ago IMO.

I don't doubt the quality of the kevlar or premium clutches, but since this is a work truck on a job 350 miles from home I've got to focus on the quickest fix. The job will finish up tomorrow and I don't want to be stuck with extra hotel bills and per diem waiting for the good stuff. If only these things would happen when it's more convenient.

P.S. Did they change this website? The computer is now underlining the words I'm spelling wrong. If it's not a change from FTE it must be the new version of Firefox.
