ive got a 1994 ford f150 with the 300 and with the e40d transmission.its got 182000k on it and i wanted to get the fluid changed.so i took it to the dealer and they said they wouldnt do it.they said if we change the fluid it has a risk of locking up the tranny. is this true or should i take a chance and change it myself or let it be.
Not sure what they mean by that. They might referring to a flush, which can mess up your transmission by dislodging "comfortable" crud and grime inside your transmission, suddenly pushing it through vital components and clogging it up. Your safest bet on a high mileage truck is to do a fluid DRAIN instead of a FLUSH. Yes it will leave a couple quarts in the system (in the cooler lines, etc) but thats a drop in the ocean compared to the ~16 quarts that it takes.
There are tutorials around for doing this. Basically you will remove the drain plug from the torque converter, and drain that. Then remove the bolts from one corner of the pan and tilt it so you can get as much fluid out as possible. Then drop and pan and drain the rest of the fluid. Replace filter, service pan gasket (possibly replace, should be reusable), bolt pan back up, fill with fluid. Here's the writeup that I followed:
