Funny you ask, I have wondered the same thing. I was going to sell my factory radio to a member of BITOG whos aftermarket radio was stolen and was looking for a factory one to replace it. His 150 was an early model and he said it wouldnt fit, something about his truck having the old school (96?) dash.

Look in the corner of the driver side windsheild from the outside and there is a sticker right above the striker pin

The only difference I know of is the head light panel, they have a more built in light with bolts where as the later ones have the same light panel as all other '98-'03 F150's and the slide clips, this only was the case for the first few months though, up until about 6 or 7/96 build date.

Plus all the recalls they had before 1/97 were of course fixed on the later builds.

The difference w/ the header panel is the pre 7/96 has a 'basket' the headlights and corner lights mount in. The basket mounts to the header panel w/ retainers very similar to the headlight retainers on the post 7/96 panel. The post 7/96 panel has the corner lights mounting directly to the panel and the retainers holding the headlights in. The only dif w/ the headlights is the post 7/96 have longer studs.

The Lightning headlights will NOT fit in the pre 7/96 header panel. The bulb is in a slightly dif location and it hits the panel. You can get a aftermarket header panel off Ebay CHEAP.
