Trans compatable?

I have a 97 f250 with a bad 5 spd ZF Transmission. Where can I find out if a ZF from a 91 F250 would fit?

It will be a zf-5 s42 and not the zf-5 s47 which has stronger internals.

Ok I'm is almost the same situation but my question to you is will the 99+ 6 speed bolt up to my 97? The only reason I ask is because I found a heck of a deal on the 6 speed and my zf-5 is almost to poop out.

The zf-6 will bolt up but it is longer from what I hear so drive shaft and crossmembers may be an issue. I don't know all the details but its not a drop in replacement.

Since we're talking tranny swaps...Is there a 5-spd or 6-spd automatic tranny that I could swap in place of my E4OD?

One more gear to shift would be great but does it give you more top or bottom end or just an extra gear in the middle. I have often wondered this. I hope it fits for you.

The 6 speed has closer ratios but still has the same overdrive ratio. If all that is involved is getting my driveshafts shortened or longer and remounting my crossmembers I might seriously consider it. Also I found that the zf5 was designed for 470 lb ft torque and the 6 speed can hold 650 lb ft. That really makes me want the 6 speed. I am still looking into it and will let you know what I come up with.

Earl sorry to hear your troubles but at this point if your in a hurry to get back on the road dont be supprised to spend a little more $$$. Good luck and keep us posted.

My dad has an 02 F350 PSD with 6 speed and it has a real granny low, something I think the ZF5 is sorely missing. I don't know what the ratio comparison is between the ZF5 and 6 is, but I'd call it an extra gear on the low end. His 6 speed drives like the old 4 speeds, you don't start out in granny gear unless you really need it.
