My dad just bought a 95' Powerstroke, F250 SuperCab 4x4 with the E4OD. The truck has around 140,000 miles on it. This past weekend he was heading to Minnesota for a fishing trip and half way there they noticed a transmission smell while stopping at a rest stop. He looked under the truck and it was dripping tranny fluid, and when he opened the hood it had blown fluid up out of the either the dip stick tube or a transmission vent (I am not sure which I am hearing this second hand). He took it to shop nearby and the technician thought it sounded like the torque converter was slipping causing overheating, he hooked it up to the scan tool and appearently that is what the codes said as well. They changed the fluid and limped it the rest of the way to MN. Does anyone know of a good transmission shop around Detroit Lakes MN? What brand (ATS, Suncoast, etc...) would you recommend for a good quality converter and transmission rebuild. I am looking for good quality near stock replacement, not a full blown racing transmission. The truck is his construction truck with a camper shell and is used for occasional pulling (up to 8,000lbs), engine is stock but might see some minor power upgrades in the future. What upgrades or improvements should he look for in the transmission?
The 7.3L PSD puts out A LOT of torque at low RPMs and is therefore known to tear through torque converters on E4ODs pretty easily. One of the most important things that you'll want to have done is to have a billet TC installed, amongst other things. Do not skimp on this rebuild, that PSD puts out a lot of power and it will tear right through your rebuild if you don't have it done right.
How much damage can occure by postponing the replacement/rebuild of the TC or whole transmission until he would get back home, that means about another 1000 miles on it before it gets fixed. Its my understanding that the codes only indicated slippage in the TC, not the rest of the transmission. Are there codes to indicate slippaged in the gears vs. the TC? My concern with postponing is getting clutch debris in other parts of the transmission possibly causing damage to other areas of the transmission that may be fine. Has anyone had succes only replacing the TC and leaving the rest of the transmission untouched or does the rest of the transmission go about the same time as the TC.
