I was walking through Pep Boys and saw that they sell all kinds of exhaust pipe fittings, reducers, and tailpipes; everything you need to hook up a muffler. I then got a crazy idea to replace my stock muffler with a Cherry bomb turbo 2.5”. Being that I didn’t have all the measurement to complete the exhaust out the side, I bought enough to drop down just before the rear axle (just past the cab of the truck). My question is, is this legal in CA? I have seen a few Ford truck with the exhaust going out the side in front of the rear tire and after thinking about it, would the exhaust heat affect the tire? So I’m not sure should if I should leave it the way it is now, angle it out to the side in front of the tire or keep the original design and go out the rear side?
I have to say I am very happy with the performance difference. It’s no race car, but it no longer feels like the engine is lacking power. When removing the factory muffler I had to start it up with just the stock cats on it and I was very surprised to hear how quiet it was. I’ve read articles about how people are running no mufflers (just the cats) and them saying it’s not loud and thought they were full of it. Being from the “Show Me State” I have to see it (hear it) to believe it, I now believe them. Yah so with the turbo muffler on it, there is just a slight low rumble. Your wife’s would approve.

Oh by the way my truck is a 95 F150 5.0-2wd-AR70W Trany-3.55LS rear end. I tried to post a picture but couldn't figure out how.
I live in Connecticut so i don't really know much about laws but i do know quite a bit about exhaust. I have a 7.3L diesel on my truck, and i just finished my exhaust job about a month ago. I have a single straight pipe running out the right side just before the rear wheel. It's pretty loud, but not as loud as a gasoline motor running straight pipes. No it wont affect your tire whatsoever. have you ever seen NASCAR? Their exhaust shoots JUST before the rear wheels and they seem to have it under control. By the way new mufflers, whether they say performance or not, will only add 5-10 horsepower at the most. Not enough to feel a noticeable difference. It's all in your head buddy!!
