I have an 86 F250 4X2 with a ford 10.25 rearend. I live in Hawaii and for me to go to town it is 15 miles downhill to get there and 15 miles uphill coming home. Towing a car up the hill I have to stay in 3rd gear , can't hit 4th, and can only go about 35 mph uphill cause I think the gearing is to much. I am currently running a FI 302 and T18 tranny and have 3.31 rear gear and was wondering if changing the ring gear would help. I also have plans off hopefully putting a 351 in but that may be a while.
3.31 seems pretty high for an F-250, and the 302 is not renowned for being a great towing motor. A gear change would definitely help out - I would go to 4.11. 3.55 isn't enough of a jump to justify the cost.
You can either find a complete axle in a junkyard or have the gears installed by a pro. I wouldn't try to do it yourself unless you know what you're getting into.
You're running 2250 at 55mph with a T-18 and 3.31's?
Then you either have the wrong ratio or you're running the wheels off a Honda.
Assuming you're running the stock 285/75R16 tires, then your ratio is more like 3.73.
In that case, going to 4.10's isn't worth it. I'd go right to 4.56's. This would mean you're running about 2750 RPMs, which is fine for a 302, you'll just burn a little more gas, but everything comes at a price.
Stock tire size is 235/85-16 but I'm running 255/70-16 but I have some 265/75-16 I'm going to put on soon. The 3.31 came form decoding the sticker on the door jam so I don't know if it is right or not. How else can I find out the ratio?
