This past weekend, I think I significantly overloaded my SD (F350 Crew Cab, Shortbed, 4x4, Single Real Wheels, 20" Rims).
Anyway, I went to get a load of stones for some landscaping needs. Asked for 2 yards. The guy who loaded me up said I was crazy and that the SD would never handle that kind of weight. I guess I gave him a dumb a$$ look and said load it anyway. After I got home, I was bound and determined to prove to myself that he was an idiot.
Since I am not in the landscaping business, I had no idea that 2 yards of stone weighs roughly 5600 lbs....
I have to admit, I was pretty impressed with the fact that the bed didn't sag nearly as much as i would have expected.
Anyway, learned a lesson (but got my rocks on and off in one load).
So, how much weight can I hold? Looks like about 4200 lbs?

I hauled 2 cubic yards of mulch in my F-350 SRW 4x4 longbed
I was very impressed with my truck, the overload leafs didn't even flex
I would def not make a habit of overloading it, but I think a few loads at max should not hurt the truck too much, IMO
make sure to just compensate for added weight when braking

Max load on a 2006 SD SRW rear axle is 7280lbs, your truck empty probably weighs close to 3800lbs on the rear axle empty. So that would leave you roughly 3480lb payload. So you were over by a bunch, which is hard on tires, suspension and axles. When you get a chance weigh your truck at your local CAT scale and you will then know your trucks wet weight empty, and the load on each axle.
I had a pallet of river rock (wrapped in chicken wire) in my bed and a couple yards of mulch on the trailer this past weekend. Sat the bed down more than I thought but I have no idea how much that pallet of rock weighed, not near payload I assume.
Ive put one and a half yard of screened top soil in mine and it handled it like a champ, I would have went with two yards if the short bed would have fit it. And if you think asking for 2 yards got a bad responce, I first asked for three yards. I was thinking that one bucket was one yard.
Thanks for the feedback. I will check the info on the tires to see what they are rated for. As I said, all in all, I was very pleased with the results. The back end did sag a bit but it wasn't so noticable that I felt like I was pointed to the sky while driving (also, my neighbor so it and said, wow, you could hold even more, it hardly dropped at all)...
As for driving, I did leave a few extra spaces between me and the car infront of me for increased breaking, drove much slower than I normally word and avoided potholes and bumps in the road.
I won't make a habbit of this but it was nice to know it can do it for short trips.
