best case trans scenario?

My truck's in the shop after leaking most of the trans fluid out Saturday. What's the least I can expect to repair? Just have the pan gasket replaced? That's where it leaked from. What do you guys think that should cost?

You sure it leaked only from the pan gasket? That's unusual for it to happen, since it is a reusable gasket and all. Did this happen suddenly or over a long period of time?

I had noticed it slowly leaking around that gasket for a few weeks, but the major leak the other day could've come from somewhere else.

If it's in a trans shop, they'll likely tell you it "needs a whole new transmission". They'll even show you the metal flakes in the pan. ;-)))

Unless this is your best friend or brother-in-law, be prepared.

The mother of a friend of my kid's used to own an AAMCO franchise. Whenever the kid was here and there was an AAMCO commercial on TV, he'd always add the tag line "But you'll get one anyway" when the commercial said, "Half of these cars don't need a transmission".

Cracked me up every time, but the kid had to have heard it "SOMEWHERE".

Unfortunate, but in lots of cases this is true. I saw a Dodge 3/4 ton w/ 10,000 miles go in for fluid change. They showed the owner the flakes and told him he needed new tranny. He told them he could not afford one since he just spent all his $$ buying the truck and it is used. They wanted to put the old fluid back. He said, "no please use new fluid I'll make an appointment for next week".

He never returned and drove the Dodge over 100000 on the same transmission. True story. Jim

The "old" fluid they were going to use might have ensured a tranny failure, too!

Ever have a Jiffy-Lube guy show you your differential fluid that he's just smeared on a piece of paper? How does he explain the sand getting on there that's "a sure sign that a change is REQUIRED".

It's the front pump, they're saying. They said it's blown and it wouldn't be worth 'patching'. (185k mi)

If it is as they claim they are right. I would consider Bryan's transmissions for replacement. Jim

What's a good way to tell if I actually received a new front pump install?

There is no good way. The only way I know of that you can be sure is to pull the trans out, remove the torque converter, remove the pump, take it apart and see if it looks new or old.

Thanks Casey. I found out they are putting a new transmission in. The "service advisor" is that terrible. I don't really know what this kind of job should cost, so when he said my front pump was "blown" and "it doesn't make sense to just 'patch it'...we'd advise you to have a new one installed" ... I'm thinking a new front pump. Nice service advising, don't you think??
