i was thinking about purchasing a 2001 ranger xlt with 115K, wanted to know how well the engines are and about how long a well maintained truck should last? thanks.
i agree.. we see lotsa rangers in here (ford dealership) with 150,000 + mileage still running strong, the 3 litre is a tough motor and the ranger is a tough truck... as long as it was maintained
mine has 100k of really tough miles as im very hard on my truck. i think it would be a pretty good truck for you. the 3.0 arnt very powerfull and usually get worse mpg than the 4.0 but they are good motors, id say go for it
Matt
p.s. if the truck has an auto tranny make sure it has engine braking in manual first gear (if it doesnt ask me why later)
if you shift the auto tranny down to first on the column, when running around 25 it should slow the truck down. if it doesnt than i would make the dealership pay for a transmission valve body gasket tsb. these trannies have a known problem with this and you might get the dealership to do it for you
I fully agree with the generall concensious here about the 3.0 being a durable long lasting motor. I bought my 94 with 100K on the ticker and 55k later still going strong after a pretty tough life. I like to drive to the limits now and then. However, against the 3.0 being weak argument, I'm more then happy with the pep it has. I also get respectable fuel mileage for 70/30 combined highway/city driving at an average of 20-21 mpg. It'd definately get more if it werent for working in the city.
Yeah I get tired of people making fun of the 3.ohsoslow!
Seriously.. I think the ones who say the 3.0 has no power never drove the 2.3, as the difference is like day and night.
Yes.. for a V6 the 3.0 is probably a bit lacking... but it's definitely worlds better than the four-banger.. and mileage isn't bad at all. I get 22-24mpg with mine. The 4.0 may be a quicker engine, but at the cost of reliability... and I haven't heard anyone report 20+mpg on that engine.
