I was away for a few days after running my 90' F-150 with a 5.0 really hard, i backed it into the drive and left for the weekend and when i returned on the following monday the truck would crank but not turn over. i dont think that my timing is off again but i keep having firing problems over and over again and my wiring is all chewed up going from the stock coil to the ignition module. is there any type of soloution that i could use that i could carry over with a new engine in a few years? i hate not being able to start my truck time after time...
If your wiring from the coil to the module is grounding due to being bare in spots or laying on hot manifolds and melting.......the truck probly isn't going to start. Replace or insulate the wiring and your spark should get to the module to start it. If that wiring is ok make sure you have spark at the plugs.....a good hot blue spark. (Plug wires can be bad too)
If you have the spark......then check your fuel pressure.......step by step testing will lead you to your problem.
it was the ECU Mod on the side of the distributor that i changed out less than 5 months ago, for some reason it keeps burning out from overheating... now i am trying to figure out why i am overheating the starting wire in between the battery and the fender mounted solinoid being that the wires are 2AWG.
You have no ground to the engine. The wire from the battery is probably bad so it's grounding through the small wires. Are you putting heat sink compound (not di-electric or silicone grease) on the TFI module when you install it? Are you using an AutoZone module? If the answer is yes and no, it's a wiring problem, if the answer is no and yes then that's the problem. Get a REAL TFI module either from the dealer or from NAPA or Carquest (get the most expensive one from them it's the same as the dealer part), and get some heat sink compound from either best buy or radio shack. If you get the little tube from radio shack USE IT ALL. Coat the backside of the module liberally. Then install the module.
well i am using a module from Advanced Auto Parts the module cost me 30 bucks and i keep bringing it in on warranty, the only large ground wire is located on the front next to the headlights, i am thinking about running a new groundwire, new solinoid and new starter wires but im not quite sure where the old ground is touching the engine. i was considering routing the ground from the battery to the bolt on the starter so the body of the starter is grounded. but i am thinking that it may be a heat problem or something more severe, because when i try to crank over when the engine is hot the starter wont get a full revoloution. the headers are killing it is my theory, because the starter wasnt designed to be around walker comp. headers.
Might need an undersized Starter. The gear reduction starters seem to work for header problems. You could also buy an inexpensive heat wrap and use that. I haven't heard how effective these are. As for the grounding problem, there should be a ground wire going from the battery to the engine block. If this wire is faulty, then what Pfogle said is happening. You need to replace this wire.
