i was towing pretty heavy this weekend with my dp-tuner set at 40 tow and i was getting an awful sound, wife described it as blowing over a pop bottle but it also had a tinny hollow sound as well. it would only do it at 64-67 mph in overdrive and 17-20 lbs of booste. at 70 or 75 no wierd noises whatso ever from 0-25 lbs it was great but this noise has me worried could also hear it in the whooosh when i would let of the gas making me think it was turbo related. boost was also staying very steady no jumping around whatso ever

That 3mph window almost makes me want to say an exhaust drone but I'm not sure with those boost #s. Hopefully another heavy tower will be able to shed some light as I don't tow heavy. Did you try to see if it is RPM related?
I don't know if you've changed anything recently before you started hearing your new noise, but I'll pass along my story in case it might be relevant. I recently made several new mods including a DP Tuner and removing a splash guard from the front of my grill that covered the opening to my Zoodad Click for full size image and this is the hole it was shielding from water and bugs Click for full size image . After doing this I noticed a weird noise that I decided might be the extra air flow through my AIS. It was noticeable under hard acceleration and increased in intensity the harder I accelerated. It was much louder and easier to induce with the DP settings 40 and 60 tow than with my previous tune (Superchip), and with stock I could just barely get the noise to occur.
To test this air flow theory I temporarily covered the hole Click for full size image , and sure enough, the noise was much less noticeable. I just had my intake apart doing a CCV mod and I felt the compressor wheel and the turbo bearing felt tight, so I don't think it's my turbo going bad again (knock on wood), so for now I'm hoping it's just the extra air flow from uncovering the hole and the DP Tuning increasing the flow even more.
Next time you're hearing the noise, try switching to stock and see what you hear, and please post your result.
i couldnt really get the boost to 20 in overdrive in stock mode at 65 mph wanted to kick down so i cant say but defiately is related to speed for sure because at 70-75 no noise what so ever at 20lbs or more.like i said i could also hear the noise in the whoosh when letting off the throttle while it was making the noise if that makes any sense
I won't get to tow again until the first week in July to really ring mine out, but I'm taking a 200 mile trip this Wed and I'll try to pin mine down a little better. I can get my noise in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, and it seems to have somewhat of a resonant quality, as it increases in intensity as RPM and boost build, then seems to reach a maximum, and then diminish some as I continue to accelerate? I just installed an air flow gauge https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/615567-more-mods-femco-air-filter-gauge-etc.html , and I'll try to correlate when I hear the noise and its intensity with air flow readings and see if I can come up with anything.
kwik i checked no play what so ever but if it was stalling wouldnt i see that on the boost gauge?
Sorry, I don't know. I don't get stalling with my setup unless I push the EGT's way too high and I don't like doing that. I've never seen the needle bounce like some people describe.
I replaced the stocker intake wheel with the WW before I put in guages

It depends on the size of the hose and restrictor on your boost gauge. I used to have compressor stalls that I could hear (and finally did in my turbo) but they weren't detectable on my boost gauge. If you check the pic in the link I gave above, you'll see that my new air flow gauge is set up to do double duty and act as a very sensitive way to detect surge back out of the turbo as well as the air flow into it.
well i moved the banks down pipe a little was getting a vibrateing sound when backing up so figured it might be causeing this other problem to. drove last night 40 tow and 60 tow no wierd noises if i put it in 80 econo i could hear some different air noises in this mode but i dont tow in 80 econo so im asumeing that is pretty normal.

Well, I hope that fixes your noise or that's it nothing serious anyway. I guess you won't know for sure until you tow again, I know that seems to be the only time I ever have any problems with my truck, and then only in out of the way places. So far a few minor road side repairs but I haven't needed a tow in 8.5 years, knocking on wood!
On my 200 mile trip today, I didn't notice my noise nearly as much as I was doing some accelerations and taking air flow readings. I don't know if something has changed or I'm just getting used to the different engine sounds with the DP? I guess I'll find out for sure when I start my big trip west this July.
ok!...I know this is off topic but.........I see you live in Missoula, and you have a very nice truck BTW. Where do you have all your custom work done at? Like your guages and other stuff? Did you use Gnomer Diesel? Sorry abot being off-topic but I am trying to get an idea where to take my truck for some of the mods I cannot do myself. thanks

Jeff,
well thankyou! any way i try to do most of the work myself but some things ive had rocky mountain diesel do and they are absolutely the best shop around i think. very nice guys John, kevin, kerry. ive bought alot of things from us diesel (goemers) talk to Moe very nice guy and will give you a very good deal. by the way these two are next door to eachother. they both stand behind what they sell very good.
I have not heard of "Rocky Mountain Diesel" but I have seen the "Goemers" (www.usdieselparts.com) website. I will have to check them out, does Rocky Mountain Diesel have a website?
no they dont but if you ever need work on your diesel in this area this is the place, rates are decent and they try very hard to keep the cost at what they quote.
