I have a 71 EB with a 302. It currently has the stock 2 brl carb with an air cleaner that I believe came from another vehicle. Anyway, I would like to put a K&N type filter on the car. I bought an aftermarket chrome type filter, but it wouldn't fit over the choke.
Has anyone had success with an aftermarket air cleaner? Details would be appreciated.
There is not much space between the carb and the hood on these early Broncos for aftermarket air cleaners, unless you have a body lift, a hood scoop, or a special aftermarket hood. That is the reason for the stock Bronco's offset air cleaner. Check you current hood clearence using clay or a ball of aluminum foil on top of the air cleaner and close the hood on it. The hieght of the crushed ball will show you your clearence. Allow at least 1/2 inch clearence for engine movement.
I put an Edelbrock Performer 500cfm and Performer intake on my 75' with a 1" spacer, and an Edelbrock 14" air cleaner. Just go to your local parts store and they should have a grab bag of air cleaner spacers for about 6 or 7 bucks that will work for you.
I got the Ford Motorsport Chrome Air cleaner and it has indentions on the bottom to clear the choke. I have been using it for about 7 years. They are about $39 and you can get them from Summit, Jegs, etc.
