Hello everyone. I have been having electrical problems with the powerstorke. Its a 97 H.D. It has fresh new batteries, but it doesnt want to turn over. I have been having starting problems, slugish starts, to not wanting to turn at all , even after fresh new charged batteries. I hear the clicking noise from the relay. Which leads me to belive it might be the trouble. Does anybody know how to check if its good? Or could my starter be the one thats going out. Any help is appreciated. thanks and have a safe memorial.
Its not rolling over. I just hear a click sound from the relay. My voltage gauge reads 10 -/+ volts . I know its not my batteries because they are brand new, And have all new terminal hardware so nothing is loose. It first started with startings that hesitated. and now it just wont crank over.
Sounds like starter to me. You can ck it if you get some one hold the key to start position and hit the starter with a hammer. If it cranks it the starter or loose wire at the solenoid.
take the starter out bring it to auto zone they will check it for free for you maybe its bad if not clean all the wires going to the starter maybe the are dirty
Get down underneath and try to wiggle the wires to the starter or better yet, snug them up with a wrench after you remove the ground strap from the batteries. Reconnect the ground strap and try to start the truck. If it starts from here on out with no problem, it was a loose wire. If not pull the starter and get it checked out. One time it was a loose wire and the other four times it was the starter.
Mine did the identical thing. I bought a new starter and problem solved. just before it quit it made a strange noise when starting but hard to hear. As always try to hit the starter and solenoid w/a hammer if that don't work take it out and have it checked like they said. My bet... bad starter. Mine went bad because I was working in an area that used an unreal amount of Calcium Carbonate which is use for stabilizing gravel roads or de-icing icy roads. Don't know where you are but if it gets cold that will cause bad probs. I have more probs but that is another thread.
Check all the connections. Especially the gounds to the block, starter solenoid & starter. Tighten the bolts that hold the starter to the engine. They have been known to get loose, some were so loose it would grind the ring gear on the flywheel.
Connect the 2 big posts on the starter relay on the fender with a big chunk of metal (screwdriver ect). If it rolls over you need a solenoid. If it does'nt roll over you need a starter.
i have checked the starter, traced all the wiring and find nothing wrong, but mine still will not turn over and you here the clicking in the relay, i have changed the ignition switch, some help PLease, the code reader will not communicate with the computer, it has power to it.
I've got a working starter in the garage if someone needs a cheaper one. Also Advanced Auto Parts offers a lifetime warranty on them. I had one go bad after several years. Took it back, no receipt, couldn't remember old phone number, oh well we'll give you one anyway and a new receipt. But yeah I've got a good one I can part with.
FYI Only:
When "Smacking" the starter with a hammer use something lighter and just "TAP" on it. The magnets are usually of a material other than metal and they will break. If that happens........NEW STARTER for sure.
I had a similar issue. I took out the starter and had it checked at autozone, they said it was good. I know you cant always rely on those tests as I've heard tha our starters can still be fried even though the test says other wise. Turns out that the teeth of the flywheel and the teeth of the starter wern't meshing properly. I fiddled with the starter and eventually the teeth meshed up and no pob's ever since
i was talking to a guy that work at autozone and he say's there test is just like hooking your starter to a pair of jumper cables it will not load the starter just engauge and spin it just what i was told.
