Just wonderin...what winch should I put on my B2 if I am only going to use one for recovery? I wont be crawling on rocks...just mainly trail riding and occassional mud holes.
If it is a used Warn, Mile Marker, or major brand, go for it as long as you can test it on a pull. $250 is cheap enough. If it says something like Harbor Freight, I would skip it. Then again, I have used the cheap portable boat 6k winches (really 2k pull) that sell for under $100 with success. Just havent pulled anything stuck to the frame.
I forget which "off-brand" (harbor freight, etc.) is actually made by mile marker, but they aren't as cheap as some people think, meaning they are the same quality and performance as the "official brand" ones. I have also seen some other winches for pretty cheap, like at Wal-Mart, Costco, etc. I personally would recommend Mile Marker or Warn, though. Mile Markers are really good, and they aren't as hard on the wallet. A 8-9,000 lb winch should be sufficient, but I have seen some people use 12,000 lb and up. I forget the formula, but there is one to figure out how big a winch you need at a minimum. You may want to Google that, just to check.
GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating), if I remember right. Best rule of thumb is, after you've 'combat loaded' your rig, take it to the scales and get your rig weight, then figure in the weight of the winch, and go from there. That way, even fully loaded, you don't grenade your winch during recovery. I've seen the Mile Marker 12,000 lb winches sell for cheaper than or about the same as the warn 9/9500 lb winches, so that is also something to consider, if you're going to spend the $$$. 5500lbs is a little on the weak side, considering I think the stock GVWR is around 4000-4200 lbs for a BII. Food for thought.
