Well, get my "new" work truck tomorrow. It's a 1993 F-350 with a dump body on it. 7.3 idi n/a with an auto (assuming E4OD??). IDidn't ask if it was a 4x4 or not. Not sure of anything else about it other than its got a fresh tranny and only 58k mi!!!!! I'll be going through the truck with the boss tomorrow before we put it into service. Any advice as to what to look for? My only real experience with diesels is with a 7.3l dit powerstroke and any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.
is it a super duty, it may be an F-450. nice truck, low milage. do you know if the previous owner used any anti-cavition additives. napa-kool is a good one. the 7.3 idi engines are prone to cavitation. they make test strips. check with others on this forum.
Really the standard things you would check on any vehicle that is new to you is what you need to look at. Tires, ball joints, tierod ends, brakes, hoses, belts, springs, fluid levels and any obvious leaks or other worn parts.
The only diesel specific checks would be filters, batteries, battery cables and the SCA levels.
Looking at the truck in you signature, you will have a lot more time to look at the scenery while driving the new work truck, but you will always get to where you are going.
Hey guys, thanks for the information. Went through everything yesterday and things seemed to check out alright. Have to go have the radiator looked at since there is a buildup of anti-freeze on the i-beam from the plow mount directly below the radiator. No visible drips, but just having it checked anyway.
Took her on the road today for about 150 miles including the trip back from a job site (~50 miles) with a good load of broken up cement in the bed. The transmission shifted well, but a little soft to feel right. I've never driven an automatic idi engine, so I'm not sure how it should feel. I think I've talked the boss into a valve body upgrade on the tranny. Any suggestions? Engine seems to have more than adequate power for what we're using it for. Held 75mph on the highway with no problems today.
Sorry for the long post, but two more questions.....
1) What is the filter on the end of the exhaust for??? It looks like a screen.
2) What rear end does this truck have? The axle tag says "65" on it.
Thanks for all the expertise so far. I'm really loving this truck.
