carburator for wheelin'

I am putting a windsor in my 69 Bronco. I'm looking for a reliable 4-barrel carb that will function well under adverse trail conditions (steep angles, bounce, etc) I believe the 2-barrels are probably more reliable but I would prefer a 4V because I do some mud races also. Anybody have any advise?

I modified a "69" Bronco years ago with a 351W out of a "70" Shelby Mustang. I ran a 700 CFM Holley double pumper with center hung floats (come stock on a "double pumper"). That carb worked excellent in all terrain. Do not use a "side hung" floats if your going to do any serious 4-wheeling.
P.S. If your engine is closer to stock I wouldn't use anything larger than a 650 CFM...you'll run faster. Deen

Actually you should use the side hung floats. It depends on what you do. Side hung bowls don't like to sidehill (which you shouldn't do anyway) and center hung bowls don't like to go up and down hills. If you are like me and do a lot of steep hills (45 degrees or more) then a side bowl is best. I have been running a 600 vaccuum secondary for years on my 302 and it has never flooded because of bumps or hills. Lower the float level some and extend the vent tubes and it will do fine. Also if you have a 302 that is relatively stock don't go over a 600 or it will bog. I have headers, a 292 duration cam, intake, and ported heads and the 600 is plenty.
Plus the 600 universal vac. sec. is the least expensive Holley carb.

Yup, I've got a couple Holly tuning books and they say that the side hung is better for off road. Actually, the quadrajet is by far the best off road carb (not that I'd get one!). Holly is coming out with a off-road specific carb...I'm waiting for that one!

I've used a 4160 holley for years offroad and never had a problem with it.

If you didn't build it, its not really yours.

Thanks for the input. I bought a Holley 4150 650 cfm double pump. I contacted Holley and they recommended putting a hose between the front and back vent and also use their off-road needle and seat. They told me it should perform fine off-road. They did not mention any new off-road carb.

I'll let you know how it runs.

Its still under development. Their shooting to have it ready for release fall of this year. If its everything its cracked up to me it will dominate the market...its supposed to have stock the off-road needle along with some type of foam in the fuel bowels to prevent slosh, along with other things I don't recall, it sounds trick. I know one of their tech guys who is keeping me in the loop. Its still kind of hush hush right now because its not finished and their trying to push their avenger carbs.

I dont know if this will help out any, for the simple fact that I do not own a Vintage Bronc. I do own a 78 Bronco though and it runs a 429 Super Cobra Jet engine. I run a Carter AFB on it with Electric choke. I have never had any problems with it what so ever and I have been through some pretty serious angles.
