Some people do that to help prevent that from happening. I had no problem with mine. If it does fall and it hits the bottom you can throw a magnet on it to hold it in the oil pan and keep on going.

Talking

Some simple little tricks that I learned from this forum a long, long time ago that just plain work:

In removing the dampener...
1) A small set of vice grips clamped to the rim and tap them with a small hammer and viola...it's loose. Reinstall the same way.

2) Remove the pump bolts, remove the banjo bolt, tap/rotate the engine until the pump raises on it's own, you can then slip your fingers beneath the pump & apply side pressure to the actuator rod when pulling the pump straight up to prevent it from falling. Replace the rod first when reinstalling.

3) When starting the BANJO BOLT back into the pump make sure the the pump is NOT tightened down. This allows the pump to be giggled side to side to facilitate in starting the banjo bolt.

Good luck, be gentle. take your time.

Sorry for digging this old one up.
I remember some talk about the dampener size a while back. I don't remember anyone coming up with the right size bolt needed to delete the dampener. Well I found the right size: (you may want to be seated for this) It is a 9/16 18 thread (9/16-18)! It is a WAY oddball size. Now I know the size but I can't find a place that carries it/one. I will try a plumbing store next time I drive by one. For now I am going to re-use the old copper washer and wrap the threads with some pink teflon tape. I hope that will stop the small leak. Anyone see anything wrong with using teflon tape on the threads?
Thanks!

If you had to use sealant I'd go with the Gasiola (?) Guzzle has on his site.

It never occured to me to use a "pastey" sealent on it, Pete.
If the pink teflon doesn't get I will try the paste. Would you still keep the copper washer with the paste? What flavor? Gasoila Chemicals - Quick and Easy Sealant Reference Guide The PLS-2?
ROENTGEEP, I don't understand "straigth or pipe style?". I spose it is straight, I dunno.
Good news/Bad news. Good news: I have pics! Bad news: I don't have the cable to upload them from the phone/camera.
Good news/Bad news. Bad news: It is raining. Good news I am over my buddy's and he has enough beer to wait the storm out!
The bolt I need is 1/2" long. The shortest they have is 1" and $20 for 20 of them. I don't know if a 1/2" of bolt in the pump will interfere with any thing. If I did have the right size, would you mess with the washer at all or would you just paste it or tape it and go?

I just spun it on. It dripped about every 20 seconds from what I could see with the flashlight and inspection morror. I tapped it a little tighter and now I don't see any drips.
I am going to run up and drop off a rented tool I have and when I am up there I will look for some "diesel paste sealent" just to have on hand ICE.
I will repoprt what happens when I get home in about an hour or so UNLESS I stop at the pub. I will see you all soon!
Thanks again!

I am glad this thread popped back up!
I spun the disc back off and re-taped it...no good.
I re-taped it with a new copper washer...no good.
I FINELY tested the the freeken disc w/air ......and do ya wanna know what?!...it was leaking around the seam!!!!! GRRRR!!!!
Went to "Track Auto" and bought a oil pan plug (14mm or 9/16) and cut it down to about 3/4 of an inch...taped the shiznit out of it (with the pink tape) and....now no leak!...bout dawg gone time I got it, lol

Did you use the cooper washer too with the bolt? And now the time will say if the dampener is necessary or not?, I have read that you need it with the split shot injs. but IDK what could be the issue (if any) not having the dampener.

So 14 mm has the same thread of 9/16 ?
Thanks for the pics.

14 = 9/16
I did not use the washer with the bolt.
I doesn't feel any different w/o the disc. From what I understand, the disc helps keep a constant pressure on the fuel being sent out inbetween pumps (when the lobe is down and the pump is ready to push it out again)
