Just diesel engines are big $$$.
Here's approximate cost of diesel swap:

7.3L IDI about $1500 used
ZF 42-5F $1500 rebuilt
New flywheel and clutch $1500
Engine mounts $100
Hydraulic clutch setup $250

Total cost = $4850
185 hp @ 3000 rpm
360 lb-ft @ 1600 rpm
Get about maybe 25 mpg

or 331 stroker

Stroker engine build $2000
AOD rebuild $500

Total Cost = $ 2500
279 hp @ 4500 rpm
365 hp @ 3500 rpm
Get about maybe 20-22 mpg

What do you choose?

Both are good in the right application, one can`t really replace the other.
In a small truck, 1/2 ton or smaller I would go with gas.
As far as a cammed shaker goes a guy I know has a far out cammed 428 in an 39-40 Hudson coupe he drives every day right from the first dry spring day till the first snow fall. It`s a wild ride but ever so neat to listen/feel to it coming up the street! It really rumbles.

Yeah good point Nathan. A diesel would be a way better tower/hauler engine, but a 302 would be really sweet for a rip around everyday use type engine.

The 302 could still pull the occasional trailer also without a problem. I think it would be sweet to put a big engine in the box and take a picture showing everyone it's still Built Mercury Tough! I might even still walk away from a S-10 at a light....

Not might, you definatly would walk away from one. And yeah, with the motor your building it will be able to pull no problem.

It would be sweet to drop the wide gear set in the AOD and then it would really walk away from a light but that is also additional $$$.

thats the idea to the restoration game isn't it. if you're going to worry about the money spent, then you shouldn't be doing it...

I think the wide gear set is like $750 unless you can find a used 47RW tranny to steal them from.
