Question intake & exhaust

I have a 2006 F150, 5.4 v8. I recently had the exhaust modified to sound better, but they are suggesting a K&N filter for more intake. Someone else told me that a K&N makes his 06 Mustanf GT idle inconsistently. He has a std trans., mine is an automatic. All I want to do is take out the old filter and put in the K&N, not change the whole intake setup. Also, will changing just the filter void the warranty? Thanks for any advice.

Just changing the filter should not void the warranty. However, I noticed that the stock filter has felt padding around it and the manual says to only use filters with that same padding. The KandN model does not have the padding.

The market is moving away from oiled gauze filters because of issues with overoiling affecting the accuracy of the MAF (good chance thats what is causing your friends problems) Look for a dry filter like an AEM or an AMSOIL Donaldson filter (EAA) Performance-wise youre looking at no advantage. The stock paper filter has plenty of surface area and flows more than enough for the engine, when maintained.
