Rear axle seal..
I have one leaky one that I plan on doing as soon as I can locate the proper installation / removal tool...
Looks to be a pretty easy job, but for some reason the Factory Manual states that the bearings and seals need to be removed as a unit, so I am looking for the proper tools to do the job. Rotunda makes them, I just haven't been able to locate any locally yet.
Also, Ford made three different rear ends for the trucks in 04, so you will need to know which one you have to order the proper parts. Mine is a 9.25", but an 8.8" & a 10.25" was also available.

PS: Anyone know if a finned aluminum cover is available for the 9.25"?

Doug - I changed the rear axle seals in my '04 F150 4X4 under my garage a few months ago, probably took less than an hour. I had a friend helping me (very mechanically inclined guy, he had his face buried in the differential - admittedly, he did most of the work). We didn't use any special tools. I do remember there was some type of locking C shaped clip that had to be removed - a bolt holding it in place - had to be careful to line the axle grooves back up (sorry, I know I'm not being real specific). A 2nd person would be a plus.
I added a Mag-Hytec finned cover at the same time. Nice product, I think you would be pleased with it.
Thanks for the info. I'll definitely look into the cover.
Did you replace the seals and bearings at the same time or just the seals? I am leaning to replace both while I have it appart, as I sure don't want to have to open up the rear end again unless I have to.

Doug - I only replaced the seals. I occasionally tow a 7000 lb. camper trailer and I know I've gotten the rear axle very hot on occasion. Seems that people who do some towing have leaking seals more than folks that never haul a load. Just my observation.

Interesting, as I really don't tow or haul that much otehr than my boat once in a while (around 3,000 lbs) and my crappy little utility trailer to the dump now and then.
