You'd need to buy the u-joints (you can get them from Dynatrac....but they aren't included in the kit).
I've seen that kit, and I like that it replaces the factory bearings. BUT. I"m leery of mods that require special parts if something breaks. If something breaks when I'm away from home, I like the idea of being able to go to any parts store or junkyard and finding replacement parts to get me home.
1) Does anyone have any experience with any other axel upgrades?
2) Are the bearing really so bad I should get a kit to replace them?
3) Any other parts store friendly upgrades?
Thanks!
If you are looking for an upgrade, you can't be afraid of using other than factory parts. As far as replacement goes, if the factory got it right when they built the truck, it would not require an upgrade.
The Dynatrac kit is One of the best mods a SD owner can do. The upgrade bearings are that much better than the factory unit bearings.
While I can appreciate your desire to have parts somewhat available, with proper maintenance of the new adjustable bearings, they will outlast the factory design and not put you in a compromising position of having to do roadside repairs. That is only one reason why the upgrade is so valuable. 35 spline outers is another great reason to upgrade, locking hubs that work every time,,,,priceless.
The Dynatrac kit uses standard "timken" bearings that can be purchased at any auto parts. A/M locking hubs (Warm or MM) parts can be purchased at any 4-wheel shop.
OEM front end parts are sealed unit and are changed as a complete set, not serviced. Parts availability is limited to Ford dealers and some auto parts houses.
Hope this helps
