Warm/hot weather idle problems
What I have is a '82 F-100 with a 300 1bbl stock except for an re-manufactured 1bbl, elec fuel pump and a aftermarket air cleaner.
If I do stop light/in town running, it will surge and almost die 3 or 4 times then cut off. If I just barely touch the throttle, it will run but I have to have the idle up around 1000 rpm. Any lower and it will just surge from 400 to 900. It also "shuts down" when I let off of the throttle while driving, but picks right up when the throttle is pushed.
When I shut the motor off, go in somewhere for less than 30 mins, it starts right up, but refuses to idle. After driving at speed for 10 to 20 mins, it will idle if I have to stop, but will soon start all over again.
The motor also runs "cold", with the temp hardly getting above 180'.
I have replaced the carb 3 or 4 times, and each carb does this when the warmer days arrive.
I am soon to go through emissions testing here in Delaware, and the idle of anything above 900 rpm will fail. Any CHEAP ideas on the problem?
I do have a 4bbl offy intake, 2 2150 carbs {filthy and rusty} and headers to put on the truck, but money is a BIG issue after the ex ran off, and the "big D" showed up
The other thing that is possible is you might have a cracked head at an intake valve.
Check Timing. Bad timing will cause these buggy issues as well.
I can't remember if these had condensers in these years, but if so, tune it up and replace the condenser as well.
Good luck!
