Shifting problems

I just recently bought a 95 crew cab, and in the last week I noticed that my speedometer was dropping out. At the same time the transmission was not shifting properly, very high rpm and then hits very hard. I also noticed that the overdrive on/off switch was flashing. It seems to be an electrical issue. It happens rarely and then goes away as I drive (within a mile). Does anyone know what the problem is or better yet a solution.
the truck has 161K on it and as far as I know the transmission is the original tranny.

I think that sounds like the VSS(Vehicle Speed Sensor). If that is on the fritz the speedo will bounce around and sometimes the OD light will flash.

yes more than likely the VSS is dropping out. the sensor is located on top of the rear differential. First check the connection there and make sure that either side is in good shape. Then drive it. if it still does it try a new sensor. they are cheap. $20 at napa. You will probably need to ask for the Rear ABS sensor at the part store in order to get the write part.
