I've been looking at what I would like to do when I rebuild my 390 and I'm curious if aftermarket parts like aluminum valve covers and oil pans will work on any 390. I know that some came in Mustangs and other cars and so far I dont have a clue what mine came out of. So I guess my question is that if I see something listed for a 390, will it work in my truck's engine regardless of what it originally came in?
Oil pans and headers would be application specific sometimes. Like Truck vs Mustang etc...
Valve covers will interchange as far as bolt pattern. Things like some of the roller rocker systems out there need a taller cover or the inner baffle removed in a stock cover for clearance sometimes. The main thing you want to watch is the head vs intake matchup on the ports. Also on the heads the bolt pattern used for the exhaust mani's/headers is different on say a Mustang compared to a truck. There are quite a few differences in heads as to applications, chamber size, valve size. Same with intakes. With low riser, medium riser, high riser, GT style, C8/D2, tunnelport and SOHC heads and intakes for the FE....you need to watch and be aware of the differences and what can interchange effectively. Things like waterpumps, fuel pumps, timing covers, gaskets and oil filter adapters all have small differences also. So it's best to ask Q's as to your intended use and fitment of different parts if your not certain of what your buying. We have all spent each others money here so everyone is really good at that. But all kidding aside the guys here are great with info and what everyone has tried and used. Good and bad.
1961/64 390's (and 1962/64 406/427) have rounded valve covers without oil caps. On these engines (352's = 1958/64 is the same setup ) there's a separate oil filler pipe and cap.
Three different FE 332/352/390 waterpumps: 1958/63; 1964 (stud for generator is different from 59/63), and....
Ok, thanks. I'm going to try and get down in there and finally figure out what this 390 came from to make this stuff easier. I just saw some nifty valve covers online and wondered if they would work. About oil pans, did I read on a thread here its better to get a rear sump for the F100s?
A 330 Light or medium duty FT engine uses the same water pump an FE does, but otherwise...there are SEVEN other pumps listed for 330 H/D, 361 and 391 FT engines.

A paddock is where horses are keep..in Oz, NZ, US...everywhere.
But in the US, the only roo's are in zoo's. No need to "tie me kangaroo down sport, tie me kangaroo down." Cuz there ain't no kangaroos runnin' loose to tie down.
(tie me kangaroo down... was a rock n roll tune from the 1960's)
