I have an 04 explorer 4.6 and was wondering where tha fuel filter is. Its also shooting up a code that means evaporative system small leak detected. I replaced the fuel cap because the old one looked a little rough and the light still comeson any other ideas I could check.
Evap codes usually set due to vapor leaks, not liquid leaks. The fuel filter isn't going to fix this, but if you must know, the filter is up above the passenger frame rail under the passenger floorboard. There is a metal shield held on with three bolts, then behind it a plastic shield held on with two bolts. There are three lines at the filter with a new goofy "quick disconnect" type fitting. You have to pry the clip "open" then push it out to release the fitting.. completely different than the old style of which you needed the tools for.
But like I said, this won't fix your code. Anything that can leak fuel vapors can set this code.. and a small leak is a VERY small leak, and can sometimes be impossible to find without a smoke machine. Could be the gas cap seal, fuel pump seal, small hole or crack in one of the vapor lines, canister purge or vent solenoid, cabon canister... lots of things.
