How does damper work in AC system?

How do I check the damper in the duct to see if it is in the heat mode?
This may be the problem why my AC is blowing hot air?
I guess when I switch the controls the damper should open or close?

This damper you are talking about is cable controlled and you should be able feel and maybe hear the damper go from open to close when you move the lever from cold to hot and back again.
Some times you will have pencils or something blocking the full movement. They drop down from the top of the dash in the vent openings.

Only real good way to check that damper is to pull the cover off the heater core. The damper and any foreign object is readily accessable and visible . Take the glove box out first, then about 8 small screws. Just a 5 minute job to pull the cover and take a look.
Good luck Frank

Would the damper be functioning properly if when in 'Vent' mode, not AC, the air being blown out goes from hot to cool with movement of the temp control ****?
Does this verify damper door operation or does it still need to be verified while in AC mode?
I have been wanting to pull the heater core cover and check but have not got to it yet and just wondering if the vent & AC modes work the same or different.
Thanks

Yes that is what it does.

If the damper has something in it, that prevents it closing completely, it will still go from hot to cool but not as cold as possible. Doesn't take a lot of hot air to bring up the output air temp. Mine had a deck screw wedged in the door. This prevented the door from closing completely. I've heard of doors having pens, kids toys, crayons, nails, etc. Pretty common problem, and really easy to check.
Good luck Frank
