Today coming home from work i heard a noise over top of my stereo which was pretty damn loud. I shut off the stereo and a could here a very loud hum. I do have a slight vibration at about 60 km. When the vibration goes away that hum comes back. It will hum whether i am accelerating or holding a constant speed. decellerate and the sound goes away.
I checked all of my universals and they are all good. my tires arent even a year old and have alot of tread on them. They have no wobble and are not seperating.
I got my rear end of the ground and it still makes the noise. Im pretty worried about it and dont feel like swapping rear ends at the moment. I need my truck until i get my car back on the road. Its just one thing after another!!!

Another thing i notice is when i shift back and forth from reverse to drive it has a higher pitch clunk that i have never noticed before. Just finished moving cows a few days ago and worked the truck pretty hard.
Any help is appreciated.
It sounds alot like a U joint. Had this happen on my sister's ranger, it got worse faster than I would have expected, we thought something major had happened, but turned out to be a VERY loose U joint on the rear driveshaft. This would produce more slack in the drive train, and could also explain the "clunk" you discribed when engaging inot drive or reverse).
If you're sure its not in the drive shaft, it may be time to pop the cover off the diffy and see what may have happend.
Gear fluid level OK? excessive backlash in the gear or input shaft bearing? Sounds like a worn u-joint symptom more than anything to me! Can you tell when its jacked up if its rear end or transfer case?
I have checked all u joints and not one of them is loose. When i jacked it up it sounded like the rear end to me. it was too far back to be the transfer case. I yet have to check the fluid. if its the yoke, can you tell me what the preload is supposed to be? (break and spin?)
The noise is more of a howl then a hum.

Could be any one of the bearings in the axle not just the yolk...... seen quite a bit of this happening on newer Ford and Chebby trucks. If you have a mechanics stethescope try to isolate it....either outer wheel bearing or inner gear bearings or the yolk bearing. Do check the fluid level...... also if you run the axle for a few seconds then check it......if it is really bad there will be visible metal flakes in the oil.
Oil in the rear is good and clean looking. I had to pull a trailer today and the howl went away. I went for lunch, came out, started to get moving and all i could here was that terrible sound you get when a universal goes out. When i got home i checked them all again and not one of them had any movement in them yet. I jacked up the rear again and checked if i had any outer bearing play and nothing. No grinding sounds, no "rough spots" or hang ups when i turn the wheels, no side to side or up and down play at all, the yoke nut doesnt appear or feel like it has loosened up at all. im kinda leaning towards a universal but its just that ive never heard that out of a universal before.
Glad to hear its not in the rear end. You would be suprised at the kind of noises a dying U joint will make.
It is possible that a U joint has worn unevenly and caused a slight offset in the driveshaft that vibrates under certain conditions (I know, I'm reaching a little here). A bad U joint will not always be loose either, corrosion can make them very tight, such that a visual inspection will not reveal much while still in the truck.
If your truck has a two piece drive shaft, than the center support bearing is something else to check.
Did you remove the drive shaft to check your U-joints for both slop and being stiff? Still sounds like a U-joint problem to me. A stiff joint caused a problem for me exactly as you discribe and eluded me for months and was only discovered when I had to remove the driveshaft for other reasons.
I had a similar howling coming out of my truck but only when I was slowing down. It wouldn't happen when it was under load. U-joints looked fine and couldn't find any play in them but decided to just replace them anyways and the center support bearing while I was at it since they had logged quite a few miles on them. It wasn't until I had the rear joint out that I found that under the cap all the needle bearings were gone. Also once I had the center bearing off I could tell that it was making some noise too. All replace and no howling now.
I can now confirm that my rear u-joint is gone because i finally noyiced some play in it last night. I have a new one coming in. Ill check that hanger bearing and the rest of the u-joints while its out. The howling is completely gone and it just a vibration at 80 and when i slow down. I hope this is it.
Glad to hear its a simple fix. don't wait too long to fix it, the vibrations at those speeds can wear away at the yoke on the drive shaft preventing a snug fit on the new U joint.
