Hello All,
I have a 04 f-350 6.0 in the Ford shop today trying to troubleshoot an erattic idle problem. Sometimes when starting the truck it lugs like it is starving for fuel and hitting the the accelerator just make it lug harder and wants to die. The dealer says that he " flashed " the computer and that it MIGHT BE a mass air sensor. he wants 230 bucks to put a new one in. He also says i should pull my K&N air filter out and go back with the stock ait filter for better protection.
Am i getting the shuck and jive crap here or does any of this sound like it could be the problem/answer
Thans for your input
It is common belief on this site that the original air filter system is the best way to go. your mass air flow sensor may have been contaminated by the oil used on the aftermarket filters. So in a nutshell your service man may very well be correct...
I have just turned over to 108000.
I opted to not have the dealer swap out the sensor until i got some feed back from you all and see if this is something i could replace myself or not...trying to save some money here as i also get to replace ball joints and rear pinion seal
thanks
My truck is doing the exact same thing. I would be leaning towards a failing injecter(s)before a MAF sensor. Do some searching, seems pretty common. I'm trying to find out if there is any way to pin-point an individual injecter without having the dealer do it. Otherwise I might just upgrade to some LIPD units.
If you have a MAF sensor problem it will show up in the computer. The K&N filter oil will give the sensor fits and cleaning it may or may not help. I do know that dang sensor is expensive but it only takes about 60 seconds to change, if that much. Go back with the stock filter unit. Unless you have major mods it will provide all the air your motor needs.
FWIW--it sounds like your dealer is guessing and doesn't have a clue about what he's doing as far as diagnostics, but he 's telling you straight on the K&N.

To bad your not closer i would do the ball joints for you ive done 2 trucks so far its not that bad...while your in there is some o-rings and a dust seal u should replace...the pinnion seal is gonna be fun though.

Injs ususally will give a code if it is a elec failure...if it is a sticking mechanical problem or broken o-rings then a break down and inspection is required.
