turbo question

I'm lacking upper end power so i was checking the waste gate on my turbo
by pulling a vacume and got a lot of oil. Is this normal or is the turbo gone?

I'll assume you have a factory turbo.

The waistgate is actuated by pressure, not vacuum. I suspect the oil you are seeing in there could be from years of slight amounts oil mist from the CDR valve going through the intake, I would expect some of that oil to settle in there. The actuator should start to move at 12-15psi, with max travel trached at about 20-22psi (according to ford), it should be able to hold this pressure for 30 seconds if its good.

Check for play in the turbo shaft, some play sideways is to be expected as long as the blades never touch the housing. Play in and out should be zero or very little (.001"-.004" is acceptable).

I just installed a boost gauge, so I was confident in disconnecting my waste gate. It made a big difference. I still can't make over 10psi unloaded. At 70 mph on flat ground maintaining I am making 3-4 psi. Disconnecting the waste gate allowed me to make more boost faster than before.

When you say disconnected the wastegate, I assume you unhooked the hose from the chamber.
Did you block off the hose?

I can not believe you can only make 10 PSI boost with the wastegate unhooked.
15 PSI is easy driving down the interstate at 60 MPH for me.

I wonder if the spring in the waistgate actuator could have broken causing it to blow off boost pressure prematurely.

Yeah, I disconnected the hose from the actuator and plugged off the hose from the chamber. I used the threaded plug in the chamber to attach my gauge hose. That 10psi is w.o.t around 70 to 80. e.g.t. peak at 900*F at that point also.

I am going to clean my air filter today, although it should be good. It's an AFE high flow. My exhaust is still factory, which I plan on changing in the next month. Gonna put on the turbo snail, 3" down pipe, 4" stacks with rain caps. Oh yeah, I am going to wrap the pipes from manifolds to turbo. What did you use for this??

The truck runs great with plenty of power. Even more since I took my tool boxes out of the back, and my "fences" (side boards) off.

Yeah, but you also make 5psi at idle in the driveway

It don't make 5 PSI at idle, but it can make 5 PSI just reving the engine while sitting still.

Everything I could get the wrap around before the turbo has two layers of header wrap on it.
Each layer was soaked with high heat ceramic paint after it was installed.

I used two rolls of header wrap doing this, the little bit I had left over went on the downpipe to keep the heat away from the floor board.

With the wastegate disabled, do watch the boost pressure at high RPM.
No use to blow the head gaskets after all this work.

Increasing the exhaust size will raise the boost you can make at all RPM's.
