Question 4 Cycle String Trimmer?

Does anyone here have a 4 cycle string trimmer? I'm thinking about replacing the tired old 2 cycle one I have now.

I have a Honda mini tiller cx 31(not sure) 4 cycle. That bad boy screams. Plus you can totaly invert it and it still runs. Sounds just like a 2 cycle also.

Edit: Its a GX31 which they do not make anymore. Now its a GX35.

I have a Honda trimmer and have been really happy with it like all my Hondas. They are pricey though.

Why not go with another 2-cycle? They are cheaper and probably will still be around a few more years. Are you thinking of going "green"?

No not "green", just for the convenience of not having to mix the oil and gas.

Im not sure the power/weight ration would be worth it on a trimmer

While not as convenient as 4 cycle, there's some stuff called Opti-II, available in plastic envelopes for about $1.25, that mixes with 1 gal of gas. No measuring or anything. It works in any 2-cycle motor (yes, even outboards), and it doesn't make any difference what the ratio is supposed to be - 1 pkg per gal works for any of them. It also contains a stabilizer, so you don't have to worry about your gas over the winter.

I have a Ryobi 4 cycle. Works great, starts easier than any 2 cycle can ever hope to. However, the only issue is that you have to work the throttle to control power / rpm. Holding it wide open makes it cut out / miss, so working the throttle is mandatory.

Rusty, you need to get a rebuild kit for the carb. It's pretty simple, it's a few gaskest, a diaphragm and a screen. I rebuilt my father-in-law's ryobi last summer. The thing runs awesome, it's got a HUGE head on it (aftermarket plastic blade one, thing has to weigh at least 5 pounds) and it runs ok with it. It doesn't like the cold weather, but that's because I stripped one of the screws that holds the carb together so it has a vacuum leak when cold.

Have you ever adjusted the valves in your 4 cycle trimmer that's cutting out when at full throttle? Mine was doing that until I got it broke in and then adjusted the valves. Now it roars. And the torque is amazing.

Sounds like a two stroke? Ya gotta be kidding. This one sounds like a 4 stroke. And don't ask me the name brand, right at this moment. It's late and I'm just about headed for bed. It's a good brand though and I expect it to last forever. It might even be a Craftsman, it's red and black. I'll look tomorrow, if I take the notion. I just had to offer my nickel's worth, once I read the part about theirs sounding like a two stroke. That sucks.

My trimmer is too new to need the adjustment, but I will check it now that you mention it. Also it is very quiet, really not much louder than an electric unit, possible not as loud.

Personal opinion, but I'd rather mix the oil and gas rather than change the oil.
