I have a 07 F250 and plan on installing a backup camera and new head unit (dvd nav) next week. A wire from the backup camera needs to go from the rear license plate to the cab. Can anyone tell me the best place to enter the cab with this wire?
I think I'm going to run the power wire to the upfitter switches so I can turn on/off the camera anytime I want, instead of just when in reverse. I don't really see an issue with this but let me know if you feel otherwise.
Run the wire along the left frame rail and then up the firewall to the area where the Factory harnesses go through. You should be able to find a grommet to pass through in that area.
There are four color-coded wires running through the firewall just for purposes like this. Maybe you might want to use one of them. They are taped up by the brake booster and under the dash by the steering column.

I know there are 4 wires for the aux switches in the dash area. Are you referring to something different? Or do these same wires extend to the outside firewall area?

He's referring to the 4 firewall pass-thru upfitter wires. All they are are wires that are cut I think Red, White, Blue and Black, on both sides of the firewall for you to do what you wish with. They are not related to the upfitter switches but can be connected to them to power accessories outside of the cab. The wires are taped to the harness just to the driver side of the master cylinder under the hood and in the area of the parking brake under the dash. As far as your camera wire goes, I dont think these will do you any good as you need to use the special type of wire that comes with the camera to get the signal into the unit.

Ah ok. They normally would do some good because I need to run a pos and neg from the rear camera all the way to the aux switches. But I also need to run the video cable to the back of the head unit. So if I have to run 1 wire all the way in I may as well run all 3. Good to know those wires are there though ! thanks
My rearview camera has all three wires contained in one insulated cable. I ran it along the drivers side frame rail all the way up to the front of the cab and then poked a small hole in the rubber grommet that the parking brake cable goes through in the floor, and ran my cable through there. It is really clean and fairly easy to route (except for by the fuel tank).
Also, I wired the power wire to both upfitter 4 and the reverse wire (using a diode) so the camera will come on any time I shift into reverse, or turn on upfitter 4.

Cool, thats exactly what I was looking for. I'll most likely run it that way. Can you tell me more about this diode and where to find the reverse wire? That sounds like a great solution because I'm lazy and don't want to flip a switch if i don't need to.
Here is a pic of the wire I tapped into for 12V+ when in reverse.
It is the black wire with pink tracer in the bottom passenger side of the fuse panel under the steering wheel.
As far as the diode goes it is like a one way valve for electricity. You put attach one end of it to the reverse wire and the other end to the upfitter switch wire and camera 12v+ wire. This allows 12v+ to come from the reverse sensor wire to power the camera, but keeps the power from the upfitter switch from turning on your reverse lights.

Is it the taped wire below the t-tie ?
So this diode must be 12v and I can pick one up at radio shack? I understand the concept and makes perfect sense, good idea.
Also, last question, I looked at my parking brake in the truck and outside. Outside there is the black insulated/protection stuff blocking access to the actual firewall. I assume I need to completely remove this ??
Yeah its the black wire with pink stripe toward the bottom of that picture that has electrical tape wrapped around it from where I stripped and soldered in a new wire.
I can't remember for 100% sure but I thought it was the parking brake cable. It doesn't actually go through the firewall, it goes through the floor right behind the gas pedal. Pull the carpet back a little and you should be able to see the grommet I am taling about. From underneath you should be able to see the wire coming out of the floor and running down to the framerail and back. It might have reflective heat resistant tape around it. I don't remember any black insulated stuff but maybe they use that on some trucks instead of the reflective tape.

Oh, the parking brake setup is to the far left. Ok, I'll check the area you mentioned. The black stuff I'm talking about is in the wheelwell. It completely covers the wheelwell area but you're saying get underneath. I'll check it out. Thanks for your help.
I see a lot of of post regarding back up cameras. What camera set up is everyone using and where did you get them?
The one I got is similar to this one. click here
its the same one a local shop tried selling me for $100 more. On top of that, they wanted $1650 for a Kenwood DDX7019 and I found it for $1100 otd. Thanks to the internet I saved $500 just in those 2 things alone.
The camera plugs into the kenwood unit and thats all there is to it. Now when I hook up my trailer I don't have to get out 10 times to line up the ball !!
