Can any of you motorheads tell me what type of manual 4 speed or 5 speed transmission would work best with a 351W Ford motor in my 1950 Ford F1 1/2 ton pickup? Its going to be a mild performance street motor, but not a race truck. Most of my driven miles are on the interstate. Also, what type of auto trans would work best and what will NOT work with this motor? Thanks for your time. Scott-Glenwood, Iowa
Thanks for the reply. Someone has a T-10 for sale locally. Ive never heard of it. Is a C-4 an older tranny? What does the shift kit do for you? Like a Lokar?
The c-4 is the most common ford tranny around in the old cars and trucks. The shift kit is a rebuild kit. It makes the tranny shift much quicker and firmer. That means no lazy shifts. The only neg is that the c-4 is a three speed while the AOD is a four speed. When you find your tranny (usually available a wrecking yards) just have it rebuilt bym a reputable shop and tell them you want a shift kit. Good luck, Jag
I have a AOD trans in my 56 F100 with a 351W engine and a 3:50 9 inch rear end. Seems to work very nice. I had a FMX before but the thing was turning about 3000 RPM at what I thought was in the 70 mph range (speed O didn't work).
I changed to the AOD and it is now running aprox 2000/2200 rpm when I keep up with highway traffic (new electric speed o quit (I'm getting tried of this)).
Anyway good luck with your project and I would recommend the AOD for a auto trans and the T5 for a manual but I think you will have to use a S10 tail shaft so the shifter is not hitting the seat.
